TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Officials say a clouded leopard has given birth to three healthy cubs at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma.
Zoo officials say the birth of the cubs is a crucial step in increasing the number of the animals, which are endangered.
A 3-year-old leopard named Sang Dao gave birth this week after mating with a 2-year-old leopard named Tien at the zoo.
The species is under pressure in the wild from human encroachment and destruction of its habitat, as well as poaching.
The elusive cats live in Southeast Asia and officials say it’s difficult to know how many are left in the wild.
