Seattle went 18 innings – you read that right, enough for an entire doubleheader – in Game 3 of the American League Division Series, but Houston rookie Jeremy Peña dashed their dreams of a second postseason game this year at T-Mobile Park with a solo homer that lifted the Astros to a 1-0 victory and series sweep ().

The game tied the record for longest in MLB postseason history and was only an inning short of the Seattle franchise record of 19 innings. It lasted six hours, 22 minutes.

Pitching dominated the deciding game, with the M’s pitching a shutout split between nine pitchers until Peña’s homer off Penn Murfee, who was in his second inning of work at the time.

Houston used eight pitchers itself for the combined shutout, with Luis García – typically a starter – earning the win in five innings of relief.

Despite the AL West-champion Astros’ sweep, all three games of the ALDS were tightly contested. The Mariners may have come up short, but they at least showed they can keep pace with a team now heading to its sixth straight AL Championship Series.

We will have more on the game on .

With COVID cases on rise again, did Washington lift mask mandate too soon? /gee-and-ursula/did-wa-lift-mask-mandate-too-soon/3479891 Fri, 20 May 2022 13:33:27 +0000 /?p=3479891 It’s been nearly two months since Washington state lifted its indoor mask mandate, and cases are creeping back up again.

According to a , the State Department of Health website shows numbers are increasing, though not as high as they were in January. Cases in Seattle Public Schools are approaching numbers not seen since January as well. And while 200 people in Washington were in hospitals a month ago, it was up to 450 last weekend.

“This is still well below some of the peaks where we’ve been before,” Pavitra Roychoudhury, an acting instructor for University of Washington virology, said in the ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ 7 report, “but what we don’t know is, are we at the beginning of a trend? Are we at the crest of a wave? We’re definitely concerned.”

On a recent edition of ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Newsradio’s Gee and Ursula Show, hosts Gee Scott and Ursula Reutin reacted to the latest news.

“The question I have is, did we lift the mask mandate too early?” asked Reutin. “When you when you hear that cases are going up, does it make you feel any kind of way other than ‘let’s just keep going?'”

Gee and Ursula are on the same page regarding their answer.

“No, and the reason why I don’t feel any particular type of way is everything that is happening right now, I don’t think any of us were shocked about it,” Scott said. “We weren’t shocked that once you take (away) the mask mandate and people are in school and people are in planes and all those things, there’s a good possibility that cases can go up. The unfortunate part is that there were 200 people (hospitalized a month ago), the Washington State Hospital Association said, and today that number is 450. You don’t like hearing that.”

The critical thing to Scott is this current variant of COVID that’s most prevalent is proving to be less dangerous for those who contract it.

“The good news is that there’s a lot of people that have been vaccinated, and this variant right now isn’t as strong so people aren’t dying as much,” he said. “The bad news is that we’re still going through it, it’s still around, and we did lose 313 people to COVID around the country (Tuesday). So if you were to ask me should they bring the mask mandate back, my answer is no. It’s going to be the same. Now, if you want to wear a mask, then I think you should wear a mask. If you don’t want to wear a mask, then do your thing. I don’t think that we’re at the level that there needs to be panic and we need to bring back the mask mandate.”

Reutin said it’s tough to go backward with a mandate now.

“Well, the genie’s out of the bottle – it’s hard to get people to willingly return to masking,” she said. “And I did notice when I was traveling, I was one of the few (that was still wearing a mask), and it wasn’t for a statement … When I am in really close quarters, I’ll put one on.

“I think you said it exactly, and I hate any day that we have to bring up COVID because we had to bring it up so much for the past two years, but I think it’s important for people to know, yes, cases are going up. Yes, more people are being hospitalized. I mean, I’m hearing from more people who are still dealing with long COVID, and that is a bit of a concern when I hear people talk about that because it’s not something that’s talked about enough. But that all said, we all know what it is and what it takes to reduce our chances.”

Mariners announcer Dave Sims and The Groz share Hank Aaron memories /kiro-nights/remembering-hank-aaron-dave-sims-groz/2496785 /kiro-nights/remembering-hank-aaron-dave-sims-groz/2496785#respond Sat, 23 Jan 2021 19:15:13 +0000 /?p=2496785 News broke Friday that Hank Aaron, a towering figure in the world of baseball who held the record for home runs in a career for 33 years, died at the age of 86.

On ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Nights, host Mike Lewis turned to two of the most knowledgeable baseball minds in Seattle – Mariners play-by-play broadcaster Dave Sims and longtime Seattle sports radio host Dave “The Groz” Grosby – to talk about Aaron’s impact on the game. As luck would have it, both Sims and Groz were able to cross paths with “Hammerin’ Hank” in their careers.

For Sims, when he found out he was in the same building as Aaron, he .

“I had one interaction with Mr. Aaron,” Sims said, noting that it was in the mid-1980s when he was hosting a sports show for WNBC Radio, which was in the same 30 Rockefeller building in New York as David Letterman’s talk show at the time. “I see on the closed circuit, in-house TV that Letterman’s show is coming on, Henry Aaron is one of the guests. I run upstairs about the sixth floor, I asked the attendant, ‘Hey, where’s Mr. Aaron going to come out when he finishes?’ He pointed to a door behind me, so I parked myself there. About 10, 15 minutes later he comes out, and I all but tackled Hank Aaron. I mean, can you imagine? ‘Mr. Aaron, I’m Dave Sims, I’m doing a sports talk show downstairs, we’re at WNBC Radio, going to be heard all around the country, I would love to just get five minutes with you.’ He gave me 25 minutes.”

The moment is one Sims will never forget.

“I got the tape buried in a box somewhere upstairs. I’ve got to dig it out sometime and digitize that bad boy,” he said. “I tried to cover A to Z and I didn’t have a ton of time to prepare for it, (but) I can still see him sitting to my left.”

For Groz, he arrived in Seattle just in time to get a gig interviewing Aaron during a book tour ().

“I was 29, 30 years old. Was definitely nervous, and he was a complete gentleman,” Groz said while mentioning that Aaron had been on a long tour answering questions on a nightly basis. “I was just struck by his dignity and by his grace.”

Aaron leaves behind a tremendous legacy as one of the best players baseball has ever seen.

“This may sound strange to say, but he was probably the most underrated player in baseball history because when he was doing his thing, there were flashier players like Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle,” Groz said, “and here was this guy who never hit 50 home runs in a season, this absolute picture of consistency, and he did everything. He led the league ultimately in almost every category during his career. In fact, one of his great years he stole 31 bases. He was second to Maury Wills in stolen bases, for crying out loud.”

“Willie Mays was more of an exciting player, he caught your eye with almost everything he did, but the beauty of ‘The Hammer,’ man, it was just consistent,” Sims said. “It was like the tortoise and the hare. … I think as we look back on his career, I’d be rooting for the Phillies or the Dodgers or whatever and ‘Hammer’ would come up and I’d go, ‘Oh jeez, here we go,’ because you knew something was going to happen.”

There was more to Aaron than his numbers on the field, though.

“Make no mistake, he was a significant, significant figure during the civil rights movement,” Groz said.

Sims has felt Aaron’s impact firsthand.

“That generation of Black ballplayers paved the way for me. There have been fewer than 10 Black Major League Baseball play-by-play announcers for a team in the history of the game, and I’m one of them,” Sims said. “I certainly stand on the shoulders of that generation of guys.”

You can listen to the full conversation with Sims and Groz at the beginning of the podcast at this link or in the player below.

Is it fair to kill 10,000 birds to keep our delicious salmon safe? /uncategorized/is-it-fair-to-kill-10000-birds-to-keep-our-delicious-salmon-safe/72411 /uncategorized/is-it-fair-to-kill-10000-birds-to-keep-our-delicious-salmon-safe/72411#respond Mon, 11 May 2015 08:47:03 +0000 http://mynw.migrate.bonnint.com/?p=72411 Don’t come between the people of the Pacific Northwest and their salmon. The double-crested cormorant may soon find out why.

A judge has decided not to block the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plan to take out 10,000 of the seabird species in the Columbia River estuary.

Why all the ire for these birds? Essentially they’re capable of killing and eating millions of baby salmon, which would put a noticeable dent in the supply for fishing and human consumption.

³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Dori Monson, who enjoyed observing the cormorants when he had a house on the Columbia, doesn’t like the plan.

“Isn’t this part of our ecosystem? I feel bad for these birds,” Monson said. “What they’re saying is it’s more important that we humans get to kill the salmon. We have to save the salmon so we can kill them, and as a result we gotta kill the birds that would otherwise eat the salmon.

“Is it OK to shoot 10,000 of them just to save the salmon so that we can kill the salmon?”

It’s a perplexing question. In the end, the salmon will be eaten, whether it’s by birds or humans. Should the birds be taken out of the equation to ensure humans can continue their usual consumption of the tasty fish?

While the plan is in place, at least for now the eradication of the double-crested cormorants isn’t a done deal.

“Conservation groups signed a preliminary injunction. They say dams kill more salmon than the double-crested cormorant,” Monson said.

New York Magazine’s recent article, has brought this phenomenon to the forefront, and while the more famous examples are in entertainment, like the to “He’s So Fine” by The Chiffons, it’s not uncommon in the workplace.

Noted mountaineer and Seattle resident Ed Viesturs, who has climbed Everest himself, talked to ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Ron and Don on Monday about the disastrously bad timing of the quake for climbers.

“This is the height of the Himalayan climbing season,” Viesturs said. “When this earthquake occurred, it released a torrent of snow and ice avalanches from neighboring peaks, and that torrent of avalanche snow decimated part of base camp and a number of people were killed at base camp, which is normally considered a haven of safety.”

The death toll from the earthquake has climbed past 4,000. Buildings in parts of Kathmandu were reduced to rubble, and there were shortages of food, fuel, electricity and shelter on Monday.

“They don’t have the funds. They don’t have the resources,” Viesturs said. “They’ve never had the standards that we do to build things that are earthquake-proof. This is a country that has a history of huge earthquakes.”

“I just want my daughter comfortable going to school,” Geiger said.

Patience was having breakfast at Broadview Thomson Elementary on April 6 when the mother of another student, who was eating with the kids, showed the girl a knife and said she was going to cut her tongue off.

According to Geiger, the parent admitted to school officials that the incident happened, but maintained she was only kidding around. Geiger doesn’t buy that it was a harmless joke, nor is she happy the parent was only given a warning and is still allowed on school property.

The threat continues to have an effect on Patience, who Geiger said is now suffering from nightmares and hasn’t been to school since the incident.

Not satisfied with how the situation has been handled, Geiger organized a protest that she said drew 30 to 35 people Monday.

“I would like the school or somebody from the district to reach out to me.”

Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer told ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Ron and Don that there was no indication that David Annis would return to murder his wife, Regina Annas, after police initially acted out a protection order.

“He was cooperative and he took his personal belongings and he left. He didn’t show any indication or signs of being angry or mad,” Troyer said.

A female friend was also shot in the incident, though she is expected to recover.

Where the story gets tricky is that while Regina Annas wanted a divorce, the couple didn’t have a history of assaults or violence.

“These restraining orders get filed every day and hundreds and hundreds of times they work … In this particular case there were no actual assaults in the past, there were no indications of anything being that violent, let alone a minor assault,” Troyer said. “When somebody leaves cooperatively and they look like they’re going to go do the right thing and (then) come back five hours later, there just really isn’t going to be a way to stop that. She didn’t even ever convey that she thought he was even capable of doing something like that. She basically just said that he frightened her and didn’t want to be around it anymore.”

The cartoon depicts Kaden Lum as an angel and Uncle Sam as the devil with two handguns and the phrase “America’s gun culture” written on his jacket.

Rantz: Cartoon exploits dead child for political points

Priggee defended the cartoon in an interview with ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Jason Rantz, who took issue with the drawing.

“A cartoon is a simple machine to make the reader think, not joke,” Priggee said. “It’s not a comic strip, it’s not entertainment, and this is where newspapers have fallen down. They have not taken any kind of opportunity to educate the public because a lot of times people come to an editorial cartoon and they say, ‘Well there’s nothing funny about this. Why is this in the newspaper?'”

In this particular case, Priggee’s aim was to get readers to think critically about America’s gun culture, something he believes is a problem on both sides of the political spectrum.

“On one side, we have a bunch of liberals that don’t care, and then on the other side, you have people that are blocking whatever little improvement could be made on tightening up whatever,” he said. “The problem is that we, as a society, are not discussing it enough. That was the intention of the cartoon.”

From Rantz’s perspective, though, Priggee’s cartoons that address the gun issue only tell one side of the story.

“I see about 80 different drawings on your website (about guns) … You go after the gun lobby, you blame the actual gun, you mock gun owners as stupid, you mock accidents that have happened,” Rantz said. “I understand that you’re actually trying to make a point. You’ve taken the stance that you are trying to go after all the issues surrounding America’s gun culture, but it seems like you’re only going after the people who support the right to bear arms.”

Rantz isn’t the only critic of the Priggee cartoon – Lum’s grandfather, Jason Trammell, told KING 5 that it was “in very bad taste” and “not in line with honoring my grandson’s memory.” And for that, Priggee is understanding.

“I am sorry they are hurt,” he said. “I hope they would see it my way. Obviously they don’t.”

The 26-year-old Fodor lost a unanimous judges decision to fellow welterweight Emmanuel Walo after three rounds Friday night. The more experienced Walo, 28, used his superior wrestling skills to earn the win, scoring numerous takedowns throughout the contest to improve to 8-2 as a pro.

The fight, which was held in Ledyard, Conn., was the first outside of Washington state for Fodor. Though it was his seventh professional MMA fight, it was easily his most high-profile bout to date, airing live on the NBC Sports Network. It was also his first professional defeat, dropping his record to 5-1-1.

Mercer Island construction tragedy ‘illustrates fragility of life’ /uncategorized/mercer-island-construction-tragedy-illustrates-fragility-of-life/72452 /uncategorized/mercer-island-construction-tragedy-illustrates-fragility-of-life/72452#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2015 06:28:42 +0000 http://mynw.migrate.bonnint.com/?p=72452 The story of a local man who died after a wall fell on him at the construction site where a new house was being built for his family is one that hits home for ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Dori Monson.

Jack Chen, a 40-year-old dentist in Renton, was stopping by the site in Mercer Island where he was having a new house built when a section of wall came down on him Wednesday night.

The story resonates with Monson, who remembers the excitement he had while watching his own family’s dream house throughout construction.

“This just illustrates the fragility of life,” Monson said. “You go from this incredibly exciting time – you have a wife, you’ve got two little kids, you’ve been diligent enough to build a dental practice after all the years of education – and then, boom, like that, gone. It’s a horrifying story to me.”

Mercer Island Police Detective Joe Morris talked to Monson on Friday about the incident.

“It’s my understanding that he stopped by with a friend to show the friend the property,” Morris said. “It appears that the contractors were attempting to put up a section of wall and it was apparently a little bit too heavy for them. When they decided it was time to put down the wall and get out of the way they communicated that amongst themselves … However they weren’t aware, it appears, that the homeowner was right by them at the time.”

The sudden and tragic nature of the incident is having an impact on all involved.

“It’s a horrible tragedy for everyone,” Morris said. “The workers, they were able to get the man out from underneath (the wall) and they began CPR, and that was followed by the responding units that arrived. I think it shook everybody.”

Dori ‘fascinated’ by group’s success in taking down Chinese flag at Capitol /uncategorized/dori-fascinated-by-groups-success-in-taking-down-chinese-flag-at-capitol/72459 /uncategorized/dori-fascinated-by-groups-success-in-taking-down-chinese-flag-at-capitol/72459#respond Tue, 07 Apr 2015 07:02:13 +0000 http://mynw.migrate.bonnint.com/?p=72459 The fact that a Chinese flag was flying at the state capitol last Friday didn’t sit well with a group of citizens, so they decided to do something about it. And it worked.

A group called Freedom for All traveled to Olympia on Saturday, the day after a Chinese delegation visited with Governor Jay Inslee, and succeeded in getting the flag taken down.

³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Dori Monson was happy to see that a group of people was not only willing to stand up for its beliefs, but was actually successful in telling the government what to do.

“I’m fascinated by this because they actually succeeded,” Monson said Tuesday. “Even though somebody in the highest level of state government ordered that flag flown, a bunch of citizens succeeded in getting it taken down, and that doesn’t happen very often where the citizens actually are in charge. But that’s the way it should be. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with how outraged these guys were over the communist Chinese flag flying over the state capitol, I just think it’s cool that some people are still willing, able and successful in standing up for what they believe.”

Anthony Bosworth, a member of Freedom for All, talked to Monson about the group’s issue with the flag. For Bosworth, the fact that China is the Washington’s No. 1 trading partner does not make up for its oppressive government.

“It’s an enemy in belief. China stands for everything that America does not stand for,” Bosworth said. “We don’t believe in oppression of people’s rights, we don’t believe in oppression of people’s liberty of freedom.”
