Investigators said the man in the vehicle was driving with a suspended license and was suspected of being impaired.

Witnesses called 911 and told dispatchers the vehicle was exploding and fully engulfed in flames. Thurston County deputies were first on the scene.

Deputies were able to pull the driver out of the wreck. It’s unclear how badly the driver was hurt.

Photos showed the airbags on the two-door coupe had deployed. Fuel and coolant from the vehicle also spilled onto the roadway. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Tumwater Police Department and the East Olympia Fire Department also responded to the crash.

The horrific one-car smashup took place on the same evening the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office added extra deputies to its DUI Emphasis Patrol, to focus on enforcement of drunk driving laws.

Seattle Police doubt drive-by claim from victim in Sand Point shooting /crime_blotter/seattle-police-drive-by/4097278 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 18:20:34 +0000 /?p=4097278 The Seattle Police Department (SPD) said the details surrounding a reported drive-by shooting in Seattle’s Sand Point neighborhood aren’t adding up.

Just after 3 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a shooting on N.E. 65th Street, a block west of Warren Magnuson Park. When they arrived, they found a man shot in the leg and possibly the ankle. He also had an injured hand.

The 38-year-old victim told investigators he had been hit by gunfire from a drive-by shooting, but, according to SPD, he provided very few details.

Medics with the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived and treated the man for his non-life-threatening injuries. SFD’s Medic One unit transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center.

Later, SPD reported that the man failed to give them any detailed information about what had taken place. The department noted that their investigation into the incident contradicted his story.

It’s unclear exactly what police turned up in their probe into the circumstances of the shooting, but SPD detectives believe the man was shot inside his own residence.

Officers reported that no shell casings were recovered, and they did not find a gun.

The investigation is still active. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.

This is a developing story, check back for updates

Victim shot and killed at his own 21st birthday party in Kent /crime_blotter/victim-shot-and-killed-at-his-own-21st-birthday-party-in-kent/4097118 Sat, 07 Jun 2025 21:14:44 +0000 /?p=4097118 Kent police say a man was shot and killed at his own 21st birthday party early Saturday morning.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, when a group of people showed up at a party uninvited, and were asked to leave.

Police say several people called 911 after hearing the sound of gunfire.

Some reported they believed the victim was outside of the home.

The shooting took place on 22nd Ave. S. near S. 250th, about a quarter mile west of Pacific Highway.

Police believe the victim was shot outside of the residence.

Friends took him to a hospital in Federal Way, but he did not survive.

Arriving officers learned the suspects left the scene immediately after the shooting.

When police arrived, they say the victim had already been transported to the hospital.

Witnesses say after the uninvited guests were asked to leave, an argument ensued and a fight broke out.

They say that’s when they heard more than one round of gunfire.

Police say the man celebrating his 21st birthday was wounded, but made it back into the home and then collapsed.

Kent detectives arrived soon after.

They interviewed witnesses and collected evidence.

Police say the investigation will continue as detectives try to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly shooting.

They are still looking for at least one suspect and anyone else who was involved

Salmonella outbreak linked to organic and cage-free eggs includes illnesses in Washington state /local/salmonella-outbreak-linked-to-organic-and-cage-free-eggs-includes-illnesses-in-washington-state/4097083 Sat, 07 Jun 2025 19:09:25 +0000 /?p=4097083 A California producer of organic and cage-free brown eggs is recalling 1.7 million eggs after at least 79 people have become ill from Salmonella contamination.

The multi-state breakout of Salmonella includes Washington.

Authorities say 21 of the people sickened had to be treated at hospitals.

On Friday, the August Egg Company recalled varieties that include organic and cage-free brown eggs.

The eggs were sold under various brand names:

  • Clover Organic
  • First Street Cage Free
  • Nulaid Brown
  • O Organics
  • Marketside Organic Cage Free
  • Raley’s Cage Free
  • Raley’s Organic Cage Free
  • Simple Truth Cage Free
  • Sun Harvest Organic Cage Free
  • Sun Harvest Cage Free
  • Sunnyside Cage Free
  • Sunnyside Organic Cage Free
  • Loose Brown Organic
  • Loose Cage Free

The Plant Code Number on the products is either P-6562 or CA5330.

They were shipped in fiber or plastic cartons, with the codes printed on one side of the carton.

The company distributed the eggs to retailers in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming.

The cartons of the recalled eggs have “sell by” dates from March 4 to June 19.

The company released the following statement regarding the egg recall:

August Egg Company is not selling fresh shell eggs at this time. Our firm has voluntarily been diverting eggs to an egg-breaking plant for over 30 days, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any potential foodborne pathogens.

Consumers who may have eggs produced in this plant, as identified by the plant code on one side of the egg carton, should return it to their place of purchase for a full refund. Further questions may be directed to the company at 1-800-710-2554, between 9am and 5pm PT.

August Egg Company of Hilmar, CA is recalling 1,700,000 dozen brown cage free and brown certified organic eggs, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

The Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, and public health officials in several states advise anyone who has the recalled eggs to throw them out or return them to the store.

Health officials also stated you should wash items and surfaces with hot, soapy water or a dishwasher if you think the eggs have come into contact with them.

Officials advise seeking care from a healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:

    • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
    • Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
    • Bloody diarrhea
    • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
    • Signs of dehydration include infrequent urination, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up.

Firefighters evacuate burning home after roof partially collapses /local/firefighters-evacuate-burning-home-after-roof-partially-collapses/4097049 Sat, 07 Jun 2025 16:10:55 +0000 /?p=4097049 Seattle firefighters had to cut short their search for victims inside a burning home early Saturday morning, after the roof of a house partially collapsed.

The flames broke out in a two-story home in the 2600 block of Delappe Pl. near the Mt. Baker and Columbia City neighborhoods.

After crews arrived, they were able to search the basement and parts of the second floor, but then immediately evacuated after the roof caved in.

No one suffered any injuries.

The call came in to dispatchers at 5:19 a.m., with a report of a fire in the two-story house.

Seattle’s Engine 30 crew arrived first.

Firefighters reported they could see flames throughout the home on both floors.

They worked quickly to put water on the fire while additional firefighters started looking for possible victims by looking through the windows.

They did not see anyone inside.

About 20 minutes after they arrived, the roof began to break apart and fall into the interior of the home.

That forced firefighters to evacuate the building and switch to a defensive strategy by spraying water from a safe distance.

Approximately six minutes later, they had the fire under control.

The fire was extinguished about 90 minutes after the first crews arrived.

Seattle Fire Department officials planned to have crews stay at the scene most of the day Saturday to watch for smoldering hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

First responders transported her to Harborview Medical Center with what were believed to be critical injuries at the time.

Later, police officers say they learned the girl did not suffer any broken bones and her injuries are considered minor.

Police say the girl and her mother were in a crosswalk just before noon Sunday, trying to get across Rainier Ave. S., when a woman driving an SUV struck her.

On off-duty parking enforcement officer at a construction site nearby saw the collision and ran over to provide medical aid.

Medics from the Seattle Fire Department arrived soon after, and continued treating the girl.

Police say the driver of the SUV did not appear to be impaired, was not arrested, and is cooperating with investigators.

The SUV was northbound on Rainier Ave. S., approaching S. Charles St.

Police say the impact of the collision threw the child into the air and onto the pavement.

A Drug Recognition Expert responded to the accident and evaluated the driver.

Detectives in the department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) also responded.

Anyone who has information regarding the collision is urged to contact the TCIS at (206) 684-8923.

The latest destruction comes just a couple of weeks after a similar incident just blocks away.

Just before 1:00 a.m. Saturday, someone called 911 to report a man throwing rocks at business windows on Westlake, just north of Denny Way.

Officers arrived and found a man who matched the description.

Ballard Bridge closure limited to Leary Way overpass /local/ballard-bridge-closure-limited-to-leary-way-overpass/4094373 Sat, 31 May 2025 17:09:33 +0000 /?p=4094373 The Ballard Bridge is not totally closed as expected, this weekend.

But Seattle Department of Transportation officials say you should still use the Aurora Bridge as an alternative.

The closure this weekend is just the overpass at the north end of the bridge that crosses over Leary Way N.W.

Crews are doing seismic retrofit work on the overpass.

That means southbound traffic will exit at Leary Way, then use the on-ramp to get onto the bridge.

It’s the same situation for those going north.

After crossing the bridge, you’ll need to exit down to Leary Way using the off-ramp, and then continue into Ballard.

So there’s still likely to be big backups, which is why SDOT is encouraging use of the Aurora or Fremont Bridges.

Japanese airliner diverted to Sea-Tac after passenger tries to open exit doors /local/japanese-airliner-diverted-to-sea-tac-after-passenger-tries-to-open-exit-doors/4092101 Sun, 25 May 2025 22:56:03 +0000 /?p=4092101 A flight from Tokyo to Houston made an emergency landing in Seattle Saturday after a passenger tried to open two of the plane’s exit doors.

According to CNN, the incident was reported by the FBI and the Port of Seattle.

The crew of the aircraft and passengers had to hold the person down.

FBI officials say, once on the ground, the person was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.

All Nippon Airways Flight 114 took off from Japan’s Haneda Airport.

Its intended destination was George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had been flying for close to ten hours before being diverted to Sea-Tac Airport.

It landed at around 4:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

CNN quoted Port of Seattle spokesperson Chris Guizlo:  “Port of Seattle Police were called due to reports of a passenger who attempted to open exit doors during the flight.”

None of the aircraft’s crew members or passengers were hurt.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration told CNN, “Our report shows the flight diverted due to a passenger disturbance.”

The airline reports that when the jet arrived at Sea-Tac, another passenger also caused some sort of disturbance.

That passenger was reportedly upset about being diverted and punched a bathroom door, according to the FBI.

Officials say that person’s actions were unrelated to the person who allegedly tried to open the exit doors.

Police say the gunfire did not hit the delivery driver, but did damage his vehicle.

Officers responded to the shooting just a few minutes before midnight Saturday evening.

The shots were fired in the Yesler Terrace neighborhood, on 8th Ave. near E. Fir St.

The suspect took off.

Police say he traveled about four blocks, then went inside an apartment building on South Jackson near 10th Ave. S., just east of I-5.

That’s where they say he held off officers in a standoff that lasted eight hours.

Officers soon discovered the suspect’s location and set up a safety perimeter around the building.

Seattle police called out two separate SWAT teams, one from its own department and another from the Bellevue Police Department.

They also deployed a K-9 unit and a Hostage Negotiating Team.

Police also were able to contact a judge and obtain a search warrant to enter the building.

Eventually, officers arrested a 41-year-old man believed to be the shooting suspect.

Officers also took into custody a 34-year-old woman.

They say she had warrants out for her arrest on charges of forgery and organized retail theft.

Police say they found two guns in the apartment believed to have been used in the shooting.

Officers booked both suspects into the King County Jail.

Detectives in the Seattle Police Department’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit are working to gather evidence from the shooting scene and the standoff location.

Search suspended for teen caught in surf at Long Beach, WA /local/search-suspended-for-teen-caught-in-surf-at-long-beach-wa/4092022 Sun, 25 May 2025 17:08:44 +0000 /?p=4092022 The Coast Guard suspended a search for a missing 15-year-old boy who struggled in the surf off Long Beach, Washington.

Crews searched for five hours by boat and helicopter over a 100-mile area Friday evening.

Two others in the boy’s group tried to swim out to him to help, but they also had a tough time trying to swim in the powerful waves and surf.

A Pacific County rescue swimmer launched a jet ski to try to help.

The rescuer made it to the two swimmers who tried to reach the teenager, and got them back to shore.

Medics transported the pair to Ocean Beach Hospital due to possible hypothermia.

The Coast Guard suspended the search for the teen at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The first reports of the teen struggling came in to watchstanders at the United States Coast Guard’s Sector Columbia River at around 8:00 p.m.

They received the report from Pacific County’s Dispatch Center.

Crews launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Cape Disappointment.

A flight crew from Air Station Astoria also boarded an MH-60 Jayhawk twin-engine helicopter to search from the air.

Officials say Coast Guard crews searched for more than five hours over a 100-nautical-mile section of the coastline.

At the time of the search, weather conditions included winds close to ten miles-per-hour, three-foot waves and water temperature of 54 degrees.

In a statement released by the U.S. Coast Guard, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Greg Merten said, “The act of suspending any search, let alone that of a 15-year-old, is something that the Coast Guard does not take lightly and not without a heavy heart.  We would like to thank the swimmer from Pacific County for their heroism and extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this horrible tragedy.”

Police responded Saturday night, around 10:00 p.m., to the car show being held in the SODO District of south Seattle.

This was going on at 4th Ave. S. just a couple of blocks north of South Lander St.

Police were not able to determine who fired the gun or where the suspect went.

The shooting took place as drivers were displaying their lowrider vehicles, customized cars with lowered chassis.

Officers say the man shot suffered a gunshot wound to the upper thigh.

They provided first aid to the victim before medics arrived at the scene.

In a statement released by Seattle Police, a sergeant reported officers at the scene “did an outstanding job stopping the bleeding.”

Once fire crews arrived, medics continued giving the man medical treatment.

A Seattle Fire Department crew transported him to Harborview Medical Center.

He is reported to be in serious, but stable, condition.

Meantime, police investigators at the shooting scene searched for evidence, but did not find any shell casings or other clues.

23 arrested during protest at Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park /local/seattle-protestors-cal-anderson-park/4091845 Sat, 24 May 2025 22:05:08 +0000 /?p=4091845 Seattle police arrested 23 people as protestors clashed with officers in Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill on Saturday.

“Police working to keep two different groups apart, witnessed multiple people inside one group throw items at the opposing group around 1:30 p.m. Saturday,” Seattle Police said in a post on the . “Officers immediately moved to arrest the people responsible, and while taking the individuals into custody, were assaulted by more protesters, resulting in even more arrests. In total, officers arrested 11 during the initial scuffle.”

SPD officials reported that some of the protesters were throwing items at officers, including water bottles. Some also knocked down fencing, police said.

They gave orders to the protesters to back away from officers and to stop throwing things at police.

“The rally wasn’t some fringe event,” said. “It was a public stand for biblical values: the sanctity of life, biological truth, and the importance of family and faith. That was enough to draw violence.”

Arrests continued throughout the day, one officer hurt

Police said over the course of the afternoon, they arrested 12 more people for assault and obstruction.

One juvenile was also arrested for obstruction, but was later released.

Washington State Patrol troopers were called out to the scene to provide officers with a brief opportunity to rest, the post said.

One officer was hurt during the protest. They were treated at the hospital and released.

According to , the event was a counter-protest to a gathering planned by a Spokane-based church.

CHSB reported the demonstration was put on by a group called “On Fire Ministries,” which is led by Christian fundamentalist pastor and former state representative Matt Shea.

Participants reportedly planned the event to condemn sex trafficking and abortion, and to defend the “sanctity of the nuclear family.”

“Anarchists infiltrated the counter-protestors group and inspired violence, prompting SPD to make arrests and ask organizers to shut down the event early, which they did,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said.

“Seattle is proud of our reputation as a welcoming, inclusive city for LGBTQ+ communities, and we stand with our trans neighbors when they face bigotry and injustice,” Harrell said. “Today’s far-right rally was held here for this very reason – to provoke a reaction by promoting beliefs that are inherently opposed to our city’s values, in the heart of Seattle’s most prominent LGBTQ+ neighborhood.”

Newborn humpback whale spotted in Salish Sea /local/newborn-humpback-whale-spotted-near-san-juan-island/4091786 Sat, 24 May 2025 18:21:57 +0000 /?p=4091786 A new addition to the Pacific Northwest’s humpback whale population arrived in the Salish Sea this week.

Whale watchers spotted a new whale calf Wednesday afternoon, in Haro Strait, between Canada’s Sidney Island and Washington state’s San Juan Island.

The reports the baby whale is believed to be the offspring of a well-known and beloved humpback female whale, known to the whale-watching community as “Big Mama.”

Big Mama has earned her name in a big way.

The newest baby humpback she’s given birth to is believed to be her eighth calf, spanning three decades.

So they say it’s pretty clear Big Mama has single-handedly played a key role in the recovery of the humpback species.

Members of the association captured photos of her newest little one breaching in the strait on Wednesday and traveling alongside its mother.

Observers also witnessed the calf several times Thursday.

The baby whale is believed to be from three to four months old.

During encounters with whale-watching boats, the calf stayed very close to its mom.

Officials from the Pacific Whale Watching Association say the calf was likely born in Hawaii, off the coast of Mexico, or near Central America.

In a statement released this week, the association’s Executive Director Erin Gless said:

We’re always eager to see who the first calf of the season will be, and we’re always anxious waiting for Big Mama’s return. This year we got to celebrate both happy occasions at once!”

Experts say humpback mothers do not give birth in the Salish Sea.

Calves are normally born over the winter in warmer waters.

They say Big Mama is a member of a whale population that’s based in Hawaii.

After several months in the warmer waters, the new babies have to travel with their mothers thousands of miles north to their feeding grounds.

They also have to avoid getting tangled up in fishing gear, being run over by large ships, and eluding killer whales, their natural predators.

Gless also emphasized how important even one humpback mother can be to rebuilding the whale population:

Big Mama is a perfect example of how important a single whale can be to a population.  She was first seen in 1997, and was one of the first humpbacks to return to the Salish Sea after the end of commercial whaling in 1966. She’s been returning ever since, and now has at least eight calves, seven grandcalves, and four great grandcalves. It’s very impressive!”

The association says two other calves Big Mama gave birth to also recently arrived in the Salish Sea.

A whale named “Divot” was born in 2003.

And another, named “Moresby”, was born in 2022.

Biologists say in the next few weeks, even more humpback whales will arrive in the Salish Sea, feeding on small fish and krill in local waters.

They’ll remain through the fall season, before migrating south.

DUI suspect blamed for wrong-way crash on SR 16 near Port Orchard /local/dui-suspect-blamed-for-wrong-way-crash-on-sr-16-near-port-orchard/4089213 Sun, 18 May 2025 17:22:09 +0000 /?p=4089213 State troopers say no one was seriously hurt when a driver suspected of being impaired caused a wrong-way crash on State Route 16 early Sunday morning.

His car slammed into another vehicle just before 2:00 a.m.

The state patrol reports a 29-year-old University Place man in a Honda Accord was westbound on State Route 16, in the eastbound lanes, about two miles south of Port Orchard.

That portion of the highway is actually in a north-south direction before it veers west toward the outskirts of Port Orchard.

When the driver realized an SUV was headed directly for his car, the state patrol says he swerved to miss it.

But he couldn’t avoid it completely.

Troopers say he clipped the rear door of a Ford Explorer being driven by a 40-year-old man who lives in Port Orchard.

Neither driver was seriously injured and investigators say both were wearing seatbelts.

But the impact did damage both the Honda and the Explorer.

Police believe the driver of the Honda was either drunk or affected by drugs.

He is likely facing a DUI charge.

This happened on Cain Lake, in the Alger community, about five miles southeast of Bellingham.

The incident began when a state trooper spotted him on a stolen motorcycle just south of Mt. Vernon.

The suspect took off northbound, trying to elude the officer, then ended up at the lake.

When he arrived at Cain Lake, the man launched a small boat.

Authorities say once in the water, the suspect started firing a gun.

Authorities say the man appeared to be firing shots in several different directions.

Officers from several agencies responded, including the Washington State Patrol, and the Whatcom and Skagit County Sheriff’s Offices.

The lake is surrounded by homes, but officers say no one in the vicinity of the gunfire was injured.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

He was still alive when they were able to get him back to the shore.

Emergency responders transferred him into an ambulance, but he did not survive.

Authorities say the suspect is 34 years old and lived in the Cape Horn area.

He has not yet been identified.

The Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s office will determine how the man died.

It’s unclear whether any homes were damaged from gunfire.

Officers did contact several residents in the area and determined no one else was hurt.

They are asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident, to talk with investigators.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) will conduct the investigation into the shooting and the man’s death.
