Unpopular opinion: There鈥檚 a reason we talk about Richard Russell the way we do

He was mentally ill. For me, that sparks compassion. It did for many others as well. Let鈥檚 start applying that compassion more often.

How do you talk about those suffering from mental illness currently living on the streets in Seattle? How do you refer to them? Do you talk about them like human beings who deserve dignity? Or as subhumans who are the scum of the region?

Based on many of the texts I get during my show, 成人X站 Nights, and the emails I receive, many of you choose the latter.

Do better. Remember, like Beebo, many of these people currently living in tents have loved ones that miss them and are heartsick over what鈥檚 happened in their lives. Or worse, they don鈥檛.

Treat everyone like you have Richard Russell. Remember, everyone has a back story. And yes, I am on my high horse. Join me up here. 滨迟鈥檚 pretty great.

The only way to fix broken people is to recognize that they are, indeed, people. Not so hard to do, right?

A Christmas letter from mom /kiro-nights/a-christmas-letter-from-mom/852964 /kiro-nights/a-christmas-letter-from-mom/852964#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 22:17:20 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=852964 This is the first year I will not be spending Christmas with my family. This is the Christmas letter I received from my mom.

Zak,

Merry Christmas.

So many years your dad and I were having to celebrate away from our families and always tried different ways to celebrate the day.

Then we were blessed with two amazing boys and decided to make Christmas special in our own ways. Christmas Eve parties for all of Medford Lakes, trips to Philly for the light show, to Peddler鈥檚 Village with John and Marian and whomever else we could drag along!

Distance became an obstacle, but we saw stockings hung in a lot of different cities. But, it didn鈥檛 matter. We had us.

This year as you and Jessica celebrate together, my Christmas wish is that you can look back with fond memories. You will be making your own traditions and memories, but always remember there is a Santa and that you are so loved. Love your wife.

Love,
Mom

Why would anyone defend Robert E. Lee? /kiro-nights/why-defend-robert-e-lee/800060 /kiro-nights/why-defend-robert-e-lee/800060#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2017 23:38:47 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=800060 For the life of me, I can鈥檛 figure this one out. And yet, it鈥檚 happening. We’re debating the defense of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Not in a high school history class, but in the White House press room and by a representative of the president himself, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is following the lead of Trump鈥檚 chief of staff General John Kelly.

RELATED: Not anti-gun, but anti-mass shootings

Why? Robert E. Lee was a treasonous criminal who tried to kill those who flew the American flag. And yet, there are people in America who are more upset by football players kneeling before the Stars and Stripes that Lee sought to destroy.

“I would tell you that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man,” Kelly recently said to Laura Ingraham.”He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which 150 years ago was more important than country. It was always loyalty to state first back in those days.鈥

鈥淎ll of our leaders have flaws,鈥 Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday morning during a press briefing 鈥淲ashington, Jefferson, JFK, Roosevelt — that doesn鈥檛 diminish their contributions to our country and it can鈥檛 erase them from our history.鈥

But Colin Kaepernick is called unpatriotic, among other harsh names.

Robert E. Lee was a traitor. That鈥檚 it. That鈥檚 the take. Yes, we should learn about him and the events of the era. We should never erase history. But we shouldn鈥檛 honor its villains.

And as we all know, President Trump hates “losers.” And Lee lost!

Not anti-gun, but anti-mass shootings /kiro-nights/not-anti-gun-but-anti-mass-shootings/773607 /kiro-nights/not-anti-gun-but-anti-mass-shootings/773607#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 22:11:30 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=773607 I鈥檓 not anti-gun. 滨迟鈥檚 really pointless to stake the position that all guns should be banned. Beyond that, it鈥檚 silly. Guns do serve an important purpose and responsible gun owners are far-and-away the norm.

I am, however, anti-mass shooting. Passionately so.

I do believe it鈥檚 ludicrous for a civilian to possess the type of firepower that caused the unprecedented carnage the nation witnessed on Sunday night. There are several weapons you鈥檙e not allowed to have. I鈥檓 merely suggesting we make that list a little bit longer. How about no one is allowed to own a weapon that fires hundreds of rounds in minutes?

Dave Ross: When is a good time to talk about gun control?

The Second Amendment already has restrictions. But, not enough. Evidence? How about 59 dead, 527 injured, one shooter.

Some texters into my show, 成人X站 Nights, pointed out the rash of stabbings occurring in Europe over the past couple of years and asked, 鈥淪hould we ban knives, too?鈥

If we start seeing headlines that a single stabber was able to successfully slaughter dozens of people in a matter of minutes, sure, I鈥檒l start making a case for knife restrictions. Until then, it鈥檚 a rather rote point.

Knives serve other purposes. The only point to the weapon used in Las Vegas is mass casualties.

So, anyone want to join me in my anti-mass shooting movement? Everyone is welcome.

Rantz: Stop the insufferable ‘now is the time’ gun talking point

The Reel Debate /kiro-nights/the-reel-debate/769295 /kiro-nights/the-reel-debate/769295#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2017 23:37:26 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=769295 Every Friday night, Tom Tangney and I take a deep dive into different film topics for an in-depth discussion. We call it The Reel Debate.

This week鈥檚 topic: The Worst Movie to Win Best Picture.

Tom鈥檚 pick: “Out of Africa” starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Won Best Picture in 1986.

It just took one supposedly romantic scene between Streep and Redford to drive Tom鈥檚 despise for the film. Meryl Streep plays a successful writer, Robert Redford what it takes to be one.

RELATED: Check out Tom’s movie reviews

She starts with a unique line, but then the scene cuts to a single lit candle (for some reason) and never comes back to her story. It is a hollow shell of a movie.

滨迟鈥檚 about a writer, supposedly possessing a creative mind. But, right when she is supposed to flaunt her ability, it cuts away to nonsense. 滨迟鈥檚 romantic dreck that only won because it鈥檚 set in a gorgeous region of Africa. However, beauty can be vapid.

Speaking of beauty…
My pick: “American Beauty” starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. Won Best Picture in 2000.

Every scene, actor, and element in “American Beauty” deserves contempt, all the way down to its oh-so-precious film score. I hate voice-overs. 滨迟鈥檚 lazy filmmaking (except in “Goodfellas”).

Guess how “American Beauty” begins? Yup! Voiceover.

The characters live a supposedly blissful suburban life, until you look a little CLOSER. LOOK CLOSER. These people are struggling with things!

Ugh.

And this scene. This scene is claw your eyes out bad.

Tom finds it moving. Boo Tom.

Did we make the right picks? Comment below.

Daryl Davis makes it a point to talk with Klansmen /kiro-nights/daryl-davis-talks-with-the-kkk/765561 /kiro-nights/daryl-davis-talks-with-the-kkk/765561#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 23:45:53 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=765561 That鈥檚 a rather striking picture, isn鈥檛 it? While most people try to avoid the KKK, Southern blues musician Daryl Davis has been seeking them out for decades. His goal is simple: He wants to ask questions; He wants to talk.

He spoke to 成人X站 Nights host Zak Burns.

RELATED: Obama was not an “ally” on immigration

Davis engages conversation by actually attending rallies and talking to Klan members in person. Some resist and become violent. He鈥檚 had a knife pulled on him. However, others agree, and that鈥檚 where Davis thinks progress begins.

The KKK is no longer a centralized organization. Many white supremacists feel the United States of America was founded by and for white people, and any non-Aryan should leave the country or be dealt with by force. Some beliefs are less extreme among the Klan, only calling for segregation. There has been an evolution and splintering among these many factions in recent years.

But Davis makes a direct correlation between the nation’s traditional white supremacists and the modern version: the alt-right.

He says most people who join these groups are just followers, looking for somewhere to belong. Through discussion, however, he tries to get to the root of their bigotry.

He doesn鈥檛 try to change their minds, but many do. Davis says he has made friends through the process of interviewing members of the Klan throughout the country.

As far as racial relations in America today, Davis asserts that there is a need to talk to people with whom we disagree and have a discussion.

滨迟鈥檚 these discussions with Daryl Davis that have led to many Klansmen becoming former Klansmen.

鈥淲hen two enemies are talking, they鈥檙e not fighting,” Davis said. “滨迟鈥檚 when the talking ceases that the ground becomes fertile for violence. So we want to keep this conversation going.鈥

‘He was not an ally’ /kiro-nights/he-was-not-an-ally/751692 /kiro-nights/he-was-not-an-ally/751692#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 13:30:20 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=751692 President Donald Trump has been routinely criticized for his rhetoric on the issue of immigration, both as a candidate and the Commander in Chief.

Justifiably.

Overlooked, however, is how his predecessor handled immigration.

President Barack Obama was not the ally to immigrants he pretended to be. His rhetoric and talking points seemed sympathetic and reformative, but he did little to create lasting change while he was in office.

滨迟鈥檚 one of the failures I find myself most disappointed about when reflecting back on the previous administration.

Mr. Obama鈥檚 deportation numbers speak for themselves. He deported 500,000 more immigrants than George W. Bush in his first six years as president.

I spoke to one of the core organizers of the , Paul Quinonez, who has been protected under DACA since 2013. Quinonez believes President Obama gave Dreamers a false sense of security by issuing an Executive Order that could later be overturned.

Quinonez is frustrated he failed to live up to campaign promises by forgoing any meaningful efforts to push through legislation when the Democrats had control of both Congress and the White House.

鈥淭hey saw us as expendable, he tried to leverage high deportation numbers to justify to Republicans that they could be trusted to enforce the law and pass immigration reform.鈥

President Obama knew installing DACA through executive order left the door open for it to be later repealed, setting the stage for Dreamers lives to be thrown into peril.

Quinonez said the signing of DACA created a false sense of complacency. He, like myself, feels let down. He recognizes that he was used a pawn.

鈥淥ur lives and the lives of our community members that he wreaked havoc upon, shouldn鈥檛 have been used in that manner. So, I don鈥檛 think he was a true ally, even though he claims he was.鈥

I interviewed Ed Murray a handful of times on issues like Uber and the soda tax. I was a member of the media and he was a politician. Those were the roles we assumed in those interactions.

RELATED: Former Mayor Mike McGinn says Murray鈥檚 resignation 鈥榰nprecedented鈥

But once, I interacted with him on a personal level. He was the guest of honor at a meeting for an emerging anti-bullying nonprofit I was involved with. The prospective board members, as well as many high school students, were in the living room of a private home. He arrived and began telling us about his personal struggles with bullies and his experiences with helping at-risk youth.

Imagine that. He was portraying himself not only as a victim, but as a savior. With kids in the room. Kids about the same age that it has been alleged he molested.

He was emotional. The room was emotional. He appeared so genuine. I feel sick thinking about that day. He convinced himself he was a good person who had helped young and troubled boys become well-adjusted men. Instead, it appears he was ruining lives.

I hate that I was manipulated into believing his narrative that afternoon.

Good riddance, Ed Murray.

The party of Reagan no more /kiro-nights/the-party-of-reagan-no-more/742354 /kiro-nights/the-party-of-reagan-no-more/742354#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 20:00:09 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=742354 There are two men who are treated like deities in the Republican party. The first is Abraham Lincoln, who is generally considered the greatest president of all time.

The other is Ronald Reagan. He is constantly quoted and his words are treated as doctrine. Donald Trump spoke often about the greatness that was the Reagan presidency.

Except, it seems, when it comes to immigration. Trump, despite his overwhelming reverence for Mr. Reagan, is crafting policies that directly defy the ideas of the Gipper. Mr. Trump, with an announcement made via Attorney General Jeff Sessions, has decided to upheave the lives of 800,000 people on American soil by suspending the DACA program put into place by President Barack Obama.

滨迟鈥檚 the second time in as many weeks that millions of Americans have seen their futures drastically change.

And President Reagan would be outraged.

Watch:

鈥淚 believe in the idea of amnesty for illegal aliens,鈥 Reagan said.

Wow.

Not just dreamers, but amnesty for everyone here making a positive contribution to society. So, why is it those who profess the most love for Reagan the least like him?

The Republicans of the 1980s were compassionate to the plight of those looking to build a better life. That鈥檚 not the case any longer. It hasn鈥檛 been for a long time.

So how can the GOP still claim to be the party of Reagan?

Why my Canadian family is loving Donald Trump /kiro-nights/why-my-canadian-family-is-loving-donald-trump/698958 /kiro-nights/why-my-canadian-family-is-loving-donald-trump/698958#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 17:24:16 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=698958 I was in Victoria over the weekend at a family gathering and inevitably, because I am the token American, the topic of President Donald Trump was the first thing many of my relatives wanted to discuss with me.

Because Canada is currently in the midst of a love affair with , I thought the conversation would be predictably hypercritical.

I was expecting a lot of: 鈥淗ow could you elect that man?鈥 and 鈥淲e just don鈥檛 understand you Americans.鈥

I heard a little Trump-bashing, but not much. It turns out most of my family is a fan of our president. Why? Because Canadians like making money too. Here are a few numbers:

  • 18,332.74 鈥 NYSE close on Nov. 8, 2016
  • 21, 638.58 鈥 Time of this post

That鈥檚 an 18 percent increase. That鈥檚 something that positively affects more than just people here in the states.

Many of my relatives on this side of the family are beginning to approach retirement age. What鈥檚 the number one reason someone isn鈥檛 quite ready to retire? Lack of savings. All those that have a 401K or a pension (which was everyone) has been thrilled with the first six months of this new administration.

For a lot of the Canucks I spoke with, this 鈥淭rump Bump鈥 (a phrase I heard quite a few times over the weekend) made the decision to end their professional life a lot easier.

One of my cousins actually moved his retirement date up an entire year.

Many academics will tell you there are a number of factors that have led to our current financial boon.

Maybe.

In good economic times, the president gets the credit. And the Canadians, polite people that they are, have no problem giving it to him.

Except this time, I believe most of us wanted to see him go free. Only O.J. could supplant Donald Trump on CNN鈥檚 breaking news coverage. He is one of the few people in the world everyone has a strong opinion about. There was not one, but two hit shows based on his life released last year. We can鈥檛 get enough of the story of the Orenthal James Simpson.

Only for the last nine years, the story hasn鈥檛 moved forward. O.J. has been in jail after a horribly botched armed robbery.

But, admit it, you want to see what happens next. O.J. is free. The Juice is loose. And the next chapter will be fascinating. Will he be shunned? Who will score the first interview? Will he get a reality show? Will he commit another crime? You want to know, don鈥檛 you? Don鈥檛 be ashamed. I do too.

October 1, the next chapter of one of the most compelling stories in American history begins.

The Seattle Dog is the shame of this city /kiro-nights/seattle-dog-is-shame-of-seattle/692361 /kiro-nights/seattle-dog-is-shame-of-seattle/692361#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2017 23:22:23 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=692361 The A.V. Club recently featured one of Seattle鈥檚 most iconic dishes: The Seattle Dog.

While there are many variations, there is, of course, one ingredient that makes a normal hot dog Seattle style — cream cheese.

While people in the region have made it a local favorite, the article points out that it hasn鈥檛 found its niche anywhere else in the country the way Chicago or Appalachian-style hot dogs have. While the author draws his own conclusions as to why, I have my own reason.

滨迟鈥檚 GROSS.

How anybody thinks the combination of hot dog and cream cheese is delicious is beyond my comprehension.

The Seattle Dog is a dish that I not only avoid eating, I get nauseous even seeing someone else do so. Especially on a hot summer day. Even imagining some Mariners or Sounders fan chowing down one of these abominations on a 90-degree day is making my stomach queasy.

I am usually the first to defend Seattle from any sort of criticism. But if any of my good friends from the East Coast or the Midwest mock our palettes for enjoying these demon dogs, I am forced to agree.

Ugh, and some people add onions. What is wrong with you?

One other qualm I have with the piece is this line: “滨迟鈥檚 a fine sandwich, but nothing so earth-shatteringly delicious to inspire hot dog stands in Cleveland or Kansas City to replicate the recipe.”

As all sensible people know, a hot dog is not a sandwich.

Evergreen State College certainly reinforced its reputation as an activist school. Now, it should go a step further.

It should willingly embrace it.

RELATED: Evergreen students, faculty speak out after tense spring quarter

It should become the most progressive haven in the country. Outdo UC-Berkeley and let the students essentially run the campus. Have a cause? Come to Evergreen. All forms of protest welcome with zero repercussions. Too much time spent fighting the good fight to finish your research paper? Take all the time you need.

I鈥檓 not kidding. That鈥檚 a brand. That鈥檚 a brand that has value. Instead of trying to restore order, encourage disorder. This would be incredibly appealing to a certain type of prospective student. President George Bridges should refuse to punish any of the students who literally kidnapped some of the faculty. He should give in to any and all student demands.

Here鈥檚 a slogan: “Evergreen State College: This is YOUR school.”

They will find undoubtedly professors who want to teach at a school like that. Many already do.

Get rid of Weinstein and go full activist. This should be Evergreen鈥檚 path going forward.

The article is entitled

The second paragraph makes clear that Sound Transit鈥檚 Link ridership is growing. Mudede laments the fact that construction on a new station is not happening anytime soon. I get that. Ok.

But, and Jason and I spent聽some time trying to figure this out, it鈥檚 the first paragraph that has left me baffled.

“Go to the Capitol Hill Station or University of Washington Station at any time, and you will find urban minds that are really with it. But Westlake Station has nothing like the geist of these stations, save in the morning, when people are heading to work. By 11 a.m., a powerful denseness falls on the station like a thick fog on a forest. Couples display their flat and vapid feelings of love by holding hands, side-by-side, on the escalator; luggage is accorded the same status as a person or a lover; and there are just a bunch of individuals bouncing around and not making much progress.鈥

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Luggage is valued equally with people?

Holding hands is bad or something?

Not making what kind of progress?

It reads like it was written during a fever dream. I asked Charles about it.

She recently penned an detailing her experience testifying in front of a number of Senators about her life as a woman and how it relates to her faith.

One of these Senators was Kamala Harris, one of the leading progressive voices in the country. Senator Harris was not interested in what Asra had to say.

We spoke to Ms.Nomani on Rantz and Burns.

鈥淚 knew it would be tense in the hearing room,鈥 Nomani said, 鈥淲hat I was not expecting, and what I was shocked to receive, was the cold shoulder, the silent treatment, from not only Senator Harris but the other women Democratic Senators that sat before me.鈥

Nomani鈥檚 criticism of Islam鈥檚 treatment of women has been largely ignored by Harris and others on the left as it seems that any critique of Islam is viewed immediately as Islamophobia.

鈥淭hey are told it is offensive if we talk about Islamic extremism, they are told they are racist and bigoted if we talk about these issues.鈥

Which is why Asra voted for Donald Trump. She doesn鈥檛 believe she can rely on the Democrats for help.

鈥淢y vote was influenced by the fact that, unfortunately, the Democratic party has cowered to Muslim lobbyists 鈥 I鈥檓 a liberal, I鈥檓 a progressive and the Democrats have abandoned and failed us on this fundamental national security issue.鈥

Nomani immigrated here when she was 4 years old and has participated in hundreds of protests in support of expanding freedoms. She believes that鈥檚 what she is doing now: standing up for freedom.

鈥淚 grew up with a very feminist interpretation of Islam. I advocate for a theology that we call Islamic feminism, one which women have equal rights to men. But we are up against the governments of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, and we need fellow liberals beside us.鈥

But they鈥檙e not. Nomani believes only Trump is speaking honestly about this issue.

She is, to a degree, correct.

It is absolutely appropriate to criticize Islam, just as it is to criticize any religion denying people鈥檚 rights.

Senator Harris, Asra Nomani deserves to be heard. She wants what you want. Listen to her.

He鈥檚 wrong. His claim is based on a few days worth of ratings from last week first reported by Adweek. 滨迟鈥檚 a narrative that right-leaning sites like Newsmax and The Federalist have jumped all over. The President has even claimed their ratings are 鈥渨ay down.鈥 滨迟鈥檚 dishonest. And I am saying this as someone who wishes CNN would tank. I can鈥檛 stand the constant alerts of breaking news, the smug half grin of Jake Tapper, and the man who squandered one of the coolest names of all time, Wolf Blitzer. However, they are doing just fine.

Here鈥檚 the truth:

They are currently 10th in cable ratings. Yes, Fox News is #1 (and always will be). MSNBC is thriving at #2. So, CNN is not performing as well as they are.

叠耻迟鈥

The network just reported its highest rated quarter (Q2) in the channel鈥檚 HISTORY. Like, ever. That鈥檚 pretty good. That鈥檚 very good.

Here are some numbers (courtesy of Politifact):

CNN Ratings
Primetime Total Viewers
2017 Q2 1,055,000
2016 Q2 959,000
2015 Q2 560,000
2014 Q2 459,000
2013 Q2 666,000

Almost 400,000 more viewers in prime than four years ago. The figures are up in every single part of the day and in every single demo as well. How is that failing?

So while CNN is everyone鈥檚 favorite punching bag at the moment, the station is being hated on by more viewers than nearly any time in its history.

‘Make it easier to get’ – How to fix the opioid crisis /kiro-nights/make-it-easier-to-get-how-to-fix-the-opioid-crisis/679318 /kiro-nights/make-it-easier-to-get-how-to-fix-the-opioid-crisis/679318#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 14:11:59 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=679318 The debate over whether or not safe injection sites should be allowed for opioid addicts in King County is currently underway.

A debate not happening right now, at least not locally, is whether or not opioids should be made illegal in the first place. Obviously, they are permitted for use as long as the user has a prescription. But what if you could walk into any local pharmacy and get your Vicodin or Percocet whenever you wanted it?

On Rantz and Burns, we spoke with Jeffrey Miron, a senior lecturer and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Economics at Harvard University, as well as director of economics studies at the Cato Institute, who believes legalizing drugs, is the way to curb the overdose epidemic the United States is now facing.

Miron is a Libertarian, so I wasn鈥檛 surprised he held these beliefs. The core principle of that school of thought is that as long as expanding other鈥檚 freedoms don鈥檛 interfere with their own, the government should get out of the way. He made this argument.

He also argued that legalizing the opiates prescribed by doctors to anyone who wanted them would reduce the criminal activity surrounding the drug trade. I believe he鈥檚 right here. Many gang economies rely heavily on the sale of heroin. But what if we could prevent opiate addicts from turning to heroin and fentanyl, the two opiates responsible for the vast majority of overdose deaths?

That is, allow them to be addicts if they wish. It was this statement from Miron that I had never heard anyone say before: 鈥淏eing a long term opiate addict is not necessarily a big deal.鈥

He might be right. The addiction can be manageable. People could function reasonably normal. There are many people who deal with chronic pain prescribed an endless amount of painkillers and manage to lead productive lives.

And there are thousands more who get prescriptions for three months and then suddenly cut off. A lot of those people become addicts and become desperate. If their medication their body now needs on a physiological level became legalized, they wouldn鈥檛 need to turn from the pills the doctor gave them to the far more dangerous world of heroin and fentanyl.

So if he is correct on all fronts, and we reduced the criminality of the addiction and allowed people to continue usage of the pills we now deprive them, would that be so bad?

There were between 59,000 and 65,000 overdose deaths last year. Perhaps, a new idea like this should be considered and taken seriously.

What we鈥檙e doing now is not working.

No, kids in Olympia aren’t playing soccer without a ball /kiro-nights/no-kids-in-olympia-arent-playing-soccer-without-a-ball/679308 /kiro-nights/no-kids-in-olympia-arent-playing-soccer-without-a-ball/679308#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2017 21:57:21 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=679308 “Ball-less soccer is very difficult, from my perspective, because I have to do a lot of imagining” – Olympia Wildcats Coach Keith Shultz

I know there is a narrative that kids today have it easy when it comes to competition. The old “everyone gets a trophy” line of thinking. Because of that, I am not surprised to see how many people fell for this video produced by the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.)

The comedy department of the CBC that is. Who knew they had one? It’s a parody video, and a very funny one.

It’s not real. It’s fake. Just wanted to clear that up before anyone shared it on there Facebook page as evidence that “kids today” are a bunch of wimps who can’t even handle the idea of a real ball.

Go Wildcats!

I tackled a naked man on Eastlake /kiro-radio/i-tackled-a-naked-man-on-eastlake/662128 /kiro-radio/i-tackled-a-naked-man-on-eastlake/662128#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2017 22:19:08 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=662128 Part One:

I live in Eastlake. I love my neighborhood. I don鈥檛 think there is anywhere in Seattle I鈥檇 rather be. 滨迟鈥檚 safe, it’s beautiful, and I can walk to work.

So can my wife. She has done so hundreds of times. She has, to this point, walked unescorted, even at night. I have thought a couple of times that she should get some pepper spray, but those thoughts are normally fleeting. 滨迟鈥檚 a safe place.

After what happened a few weeks ago, I feel different. Hopefully, it鈥檚 a temporary feeling.

I was watching “Better Call Saul” when I got a frantic Facetime audio call from my clearly upset spouse. She was running and her voice was shaky. I leaped up.

I have to edit some of the language, but this is how the conversation went:

Me: Hi.

Her: (out of breath) Some guy is totally naked and wearing a mask and masturbating and he said that he wanted to lick my white .

Me: WHERE ARE YOU?

Her: Running towards the apartment.

I was downstairs in 15 seconds. I charged towards her and then towards the bushes where she said he was hiding. I called for him to come out. I was enraged and ready to, I鈥檒l admit it, do him as much damage as I possibly could. Which, at my current state in that moment, probably would have been substantial.

He was gone. My wife and I stood there for a moment and then called 911. We didn鈥檛 think he could have gotten far. He was naked and wearing a mask, after all. People tend to notice things like that.

Unfortunately, he was gone by the time the cops arrived.

Later, after the report was filed, my wife assured me that she was OK. She鈥檚 tough. Understand that this man was four feet from her.

So I鈥檓 trying to not let this one isolated incident change my perception of Eastlake. But we had an attempted break-in just over a month ago. 滨迟鈥檚 getting harder. Yet, I don鈥檛 intend to move. I will continue to defend my neighborhood and Seattle as a whole. This stuff happens.

I just hate that it happened to her. So much. My anger is still right there. It will be there for a good while.

Part Two:

Flash forward to Monday night. Again, I was home watching “Better Call Saul.” I texted my wife and asked if she wanted me to come meet her. She said no and that she will be home in a few minutes.

A few minutes later, my phone rang. 滨迟鈥檚 Jessica. She was across the street from his hiding spot and could see him peering at her. He was naked. He was touching himself.

I sprinted downstairs and ran toward the area of bushes he shrouds himself in. I saw his silhouette. I, unfortunately, could see he was naked. I started screaming at him to stay where he was.

He started to run. This probably wasn鈥檛 the smartest decision, but I tackled him onto the sidewalk.
I am on top of a naked pervert and doing everything I can to detain him. He fought back; he tried to bite me. He tried to bribe me, which I, admittedly, found amusing.

Jessica called 911. For six minutes, I had to make sure he didn鈥檛 go anywhere. Then the cops arrived and put him in cuffs. We gave our statements and found out they had been looking for this guy for two years. He takes the bus all the way from West Seattle.

I am happy to post this update, especially for Jessica, who really needed this closure. I will post updates as charges are filed or if I am called to testify.

Thanks to Officer Garick Mattson.

‘Progressive’ professor: All immigration should be limited /jason-rantz/progressive-professor-all-immigration-should-be-limited/623021 /jason-rantz/progressive-professor-all-immigration-should-be-limited/623021#respond Mon, 08 May 2017 12:57:09 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=623021 Every Friday at 9 p.m, Jason Rantz and I talk to someone who has an unusual perspective, job, or life experience that may otherwise be mocked or dismissed. We give him or her a chance to be heard.

We鈥檝e called the segment “A Fair Shake.”

RELATED: Meet Seattle’s mermaids … and merman

Illegal immigration was one of the most talked about issues of the 2016 presidential campaign. 滨迟鈥檚 one of the more divisive issues in the political realm. On one side you have sanctuary cities like Seattle, and on the other, you have chants of 鈥淏uild the Wall!鈥

The issue of legal immigration, however, is less controversial. Aside from the travel ban issued by the Trump Administration that has been repeatedly struck down in court, very few voices have called for capping the number of those emigrating to America in a lawful manner.

Colorado State University Professor is calling for just that. He is a self-proclaimed progressive who believes that LEGAL immigration is harmful to our country.

He’s a perfect guest for our segment. 滨迟鈥檚 an abnormal position for anyone to take, but especially for someone who professes to be leftist. That鈥檚 unheard of.

In his new book, 鈥淗ow Many is Too Many?鈥, Cafaro lays out his case for reducing the number of people we allow to cross our border to make a new home. He was in town to lecture at and we had the opportunity to speak with him.

Jason and I were both skeptical of his position but allowed him to explain himself. You can listen to the interview .

His basic premise is this: The United States, from an environmental perspective, can鈥檛 supply enough resources for the population explosion that immigrants often cause. Beyond that, he also holds the belief that the migrant workforce is destroying the American middle class. He would like to see the number of people allowed into the country cut in half. At that point, Cafaro contends, the population will stabilize.

The problem with his argument is two-fold. He had no data to prove that it was immigration that has caused wages to remain stagnant. As for the environmental concerns, there were many holes in his reasoning.

Listen to the interview to hear us challenge his ideas. Perhaps you will see his point of view as valid. That’s why we do the segment.
