Trucks hauling “oversized loads” can cause plenty of frustration on Western Washington roadways.
One user asked this week if it’s possible for the state and cities to regulate the hours that vehicles hauling an oversized load drive on the freeways. The user was justifiably irritated, having to deal with a truck “taking up 2 lanes” and the traffic behind it on I-405.
Vehicles operating under a Special Motor Vehicle Permit, including those displaying “Oversized Load,” are restricted from some roads during certain times. That includes I-405 from milepost 0 to 30.32.
According to the state, vehicles with the special permits can’t drive on I-405 from 6-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. in either the northbound or southbound lanes.

So why was a truck hauling such a big load able to drive on I-405 at the time the reddit user was? According to the post, the user saw the oversized load at approximately 9 a.m. That is the end of the time restriction on oversized loads.
It’s possible the truck wasn’t completely at fault. I-405 is known for its congestion. With students heading back to school this week, things aren’t likely to improve.
Maybe that’s just another reason to look forward to the planned improvements on I-405 and why shoulder driving could be such a relief for some.
