A man from Kirkland has been accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his elderly mother.
According to the Kirkland Police Department (KPD), the suspect stole more than $826,000. Detectives arrested him last week after months of investigating.
The suspect’s mother, who currently lives in a retirement home, granted her son power of attorney — a written authorization that allows someone else to act on her behalf. Power of attorney gave him access to her accounts.
A family member grew suspicious, according to KPD, and decided to call Adult Protective Services (APS).
“APS received a tip from an extended family member who was concerned about possible misuse of those funds,” KPD wrote in a . “APS referred the matter to KPD.”
The department obtained a series of warrants to access financial records, uncovering a money trail.
After several months of investigation, the son was arrested on July 17 and booked into King County Jail.
The case is now with the prosecutor’s office.
