As it turns out, Americans’ dedication to work may also be why our country struggles so much with poor nutritional choices and bad food.
“Devoured” author Sophie Egan told Seattle’s Morning News that despite the growing trend of buying local and eating organic, we just can’t help but bite on the next new thing being marketed.
“Some of our greatest strengths as Americans are among our greatest weaknesses as eaters,” she explained. “Our premium on productivity, work, individualism, and independence are central to who we are. As well as progress and innovation.”
Egan points out that organic options, free-range meats, farm-to-table produce, and gluten free foods are in high demand. Yet …
“At the same time, the marketing and cultural environment is incredibly powerful,” she said.
And what, pray tell, does that get us to eat? Well, items such Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos, which sold 100 million in 10 weeks, for one. Or how about this: Hot dog-stuffed pizza crust. Things that Egan calls “stunt foods.”
It’s this “adventurous” food that gets people excited, even if it isn’t healthy, Egan explains. It’s all “clickbait of the real world.”
I{t’s not just young people chomping down on the marketed foods. ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Chris Sullivan says he’s all for a hot dog delivered in a pizza.
“You’re just a fish on a hook,” ³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Dave Ross told him.
“As long as it fills my stomach, I don’t care,” Sullivan responded.
