Michael Flynn was one of the keynote speakers at the “For God & Country Patriot Roundup” held at the over the weekend.
Mr. Flynn, you鈥檒l remember, served three weeks as President Trump鈥檚 national security adviser, pleaded guilty to making false statements about his Russian contacts, and was finally pardoned.
During a Q&A at the convention, he got this question:
鈥淚鈥檓 a simple marine. 鈥 I want to know what happened in Minamar can鈥檛 happen here.鈥
He apparently meant Myanmar, formerly Burma, where the military in February rejected the election results, shut down the internet, and kicked out the elected government. So Flynn is being asked why that can鈥檛 happen here.
Here鈥檚 how he answered:
鈥淣o reason, I mean it SHOULD happen here, that鈥檚 right 鈥 one more.鈥
Then he quickly moves on.
When that clip hits the internet, suddenly the headlines are saying, 鈥淢ichael Flynn appears to suggest a Myanmar-style coup should happen in the United States.”
So I checked again. Did he say that after being asked, 鈥淲hy what happened in Myanmar CAN鈥橳 happen here?鈥
鈥淣o reason, 鈥 it should happen here, no reason.鈥
It sounds to me like he is saying that. And yet, within a few hours, Flynn issued this statement:
鈥淟et me be very clear. There is no reason whatsoever for any coup in America, and I do not and have not at any time called for any action of that sort. Let me repeat my response to a question asked at the conference: There is no reason it (a coup) should happen here (in America).”
OK, so just to double check, here鈥檚 the answer at three-quarter speed to the question, 鈥渨hy what happened in Myanmar CAN鈥橳 happen here.鈥
“No reason. I mean, it SHOULD happen here, no reason.”
See, he鈥檚 asked why it CAN鈥橳 happen, and says “no reason.鈥 Then starts a new sentence and says, 鈥淚 mean, it SHOULD happen here.鈥
But let鈥檚 triple check. Slow it down to half-speed.
鈥淣o reason. I mean, it SHOULD happen here, no reason.”
Well, this isn鈥檛 helping. So I say we just accept his explanation that he was telling the God and Country Patriots that a coup should NOT happen here, and that there is 鈥淣O reason” whatsoever for any coup in America. Which would mean the cheers we heard from the God and Country Patriots were a repudiation of what happened in Myanmar, where the military overthrew a democratically-elected government.
In fact, for God and Country Patriots, who revere the Second Amendment, what happened in Myanmar can鈥檛 happen here because that鈥檚 exactly what the Second Amendment was intended to prevent.
So I鈥檓 glad he explained. I feel better now.
