I figured that if there was going to be any pushback against yesterday鈥檚 verdict I鈥檇 find it on Fox, so I clicked over to Fox, and heard this:

“Well, in terms of a verdict, I mean, listen, I can say as a former prosecutor that I trust juries. And I trust that the jury here did its job, I think it鈥檚 an instance where you see the criminal justice system at work.”

That is Josh Hawley, famous for being the first senator to announce he would try to block Joe Biden’s election. Which is to say, he鈥檚 pretty conservative. But he was fine with the verdict.

“This is clearly the criminal justice system being able to work and I hope we鈥檙e able to let that go forward,” Hawley said.

But where he did push back was on the corporations that have endorsed the Black Lives Matter protests. That鈥檚 what got my attention.

“These corporations are delighted to give some money to BLM, to say that they are woke, to say that they believe in racial justice, but what have they been doing for the last 20, 30, 40 years?” Hawley asked. “They鈥檝e been shipping jobs overseas, they鈥檝e been hollowing out the urban core, they鈥檝e been taking away good-paying American jobs for Americans of all races and backgrounds and they want us to look the other way while they continue to pursue those policies that have devastated whole communities, including in the urban core, and pretend that they are socially just. It鈥檚 a shell game and it鈥檚 time we called them on it.鈥

Here is a super-conservative Republican passionate about holding corporations responsible for what they have done to minority communities. So I immediately thought, the president is hot to get Senate approval for his huge Fix-Up-America bill, which would create all sorts of American jobs for minorities. To pay for it, he wants to raise the corporate income tax.

Well here is a Republican senator, who is to the right of Mitch McConnell, looking to call out corporations for their hypocrisy! What better way than to tax them? Senator, call the president. You may each be walking in opposite directions, but by some miracle you have landed on the same page.
