I was browsing Twitter 鈥 and this tweet popped up from a pleasant-looking gray-haired woman named 鈥 a writer of short stories in New Orleans with 288 followers. I鈥檓 not one of her followers, but she popped up anyway thanks to Twitter鈥檚 dark magic.
And the Tweet caught my attention because it was a sketch for a short story she鈥檚 thinking of writing 鈥 about a world where abortions aren鈥檛 necessary.
Which we all agree would be great!
So, in her fantasy world, when a male turns 14, he would get a notice 鈥 like a draft notice 鈥 only it鈥檚 a notice to report to the vasectomy office where he gets a mandatory vasectomy and his DNA is recorded in case he reverses it without permission.
And 鈥 he only gets permission to reverse it when he鈥檚 ready to BE A FATHER (she puts that in caps), and signs a formal agreement 鈥 which I assume would make him responsible for any offspring. Only then could the vasectomy be legally reversed.
And she concludes by saying 鈥淢en, how did that make u feel?鈥
Well that started quite the debate鈥 and yes, there was more support from women than men 鈥 although a few men had no problem 鈥 one guy wrote, 鈥渇ine with me, would have removed a lot of anxiety from my earlier life ….鈥
Good point 鈥 ending Roe complicates life for a lot of men too.
But the mandatory vasectomy idea did cut a little too close for others. They complained about the complications, that reversal is not always possible, and also that for the government to dictate what they a man can do with his body was wrong. Like being forced to get a vaccine or wear a mask.
Which of course is exactly the point Carol Pulitzer was trying to make.
Could it ever actually happen? Well, at last check, there are about 20 million more registered female voters than male voters鈥 and if Roe v Wade does disappear and enough women get really angry 鈥 who knows?
But don鈥檛 worry guys 鈥 Carol says she would grant exceptions. The operation would not be required of young men who could certify that they are gay.
