What to do about the thousands of children from Central America now in U.S. custody at the Southern border?
A group of Republicans led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy . McCarthy said he was moved, as a father, at the sight of so many children, and not just from Central America, but from Haiti, Sri Lanka, even Iran.
“Why were they coming now?” he asked. “They were being released into the country.鈥
He seemed moved by what he saw.
“You look in the eyes of these children, 鈥 no adults in sight.鈥
He blamed it on Biden for reversing Trump鈥檚 border policies, one of which was to treat illegal border-crossers as criminals to be removed immediately and separated from their children.
And yet, when McCarthy was asked yesterday what he would do, he didn鈥檛 suggest anything like that 鈥 he said let鈥檚 fix the system.
“The right way is to have a system that can work 鈥 to keep families together,” he recommended.
So, he鈥檚 saying people who want to come here shouldn鈥檛 have to wait forever; that if immigrants get an education here they should be encouraged to stay here; and that families should be allowed to immigrate together 鈥 although, are you really sure about that last part, Congressman?
“I don鈥檛 think we should put the married brothers 鈥 ability to come.鈥
So a few conditions, but still 鈥 that sounds pretty close to what Democrats have been calling for: cut the waiting period, welcome the Dreamers, keep families together. I say hold a vote and get it done, before someone makes it a political issue!
