A lot of sports happened over the weekend — but I just want to go back, for a moment, to the Mariners game on . Because it was a reminder to me, as an admittedly sporadic sports fan, just how powerful a single game can be.
What I was listening to Saturday afternoon was not just another Mariners game. What happened in Toronto was an unscripted human struggle so engrossing that I was able to apply wood stain to an entire porch, which involved being on my knees, scrubbing, sanding, brushing, and inhaling fumes for a good three hours – without noticing the passage of time!

And not only that – because of the way that game ended, despite the physical discomfort, I was actually in a good mood afterward.
I was in such a good mood that I decided – heck while the stain is drying, I’ll go mow the lawn!
That is the power of sports.
And I have to believe many of you experienced the very same thing.
I could imagine thousands of people riveted to their radios, cheerfully scrubbing windows, painting decks, washing cars, losing all sense of time, because the drudgery of the moment was so totally eclipsed by the baseball miracle unfolding live before their ears.
And there must have been an afterglow too because Sunday we spent an hour at Costco and we barely argued over what to buy, and in the Costco gas line, no one honked when I forgot whether you insert the Costco Card first or the charge card.
I even saw people peacefully zipper-merging on Interstate 90 on the way home.
Again, very possibly the afterglow of that game. Which seemed to last … right up until the Seahawks game.
But keep in mind – the Hawks could also be setting the stage for a spectacular end-of-the-season comeback of their own.
I hope so. Because I have a very long list of chores.
