Despite what you may think, this is still a pro-choice country 鈥 in that you still get to choose which state you want to live in.
Just choose wisely 鈥 because the changes are just beginning.
Our legal expert Former State Attorney General Rob McKenna says Georgia lawmakers, for example, are considering personhood laws, which give a fetus full human rights, and which could require blood tests to establish paternity within weeks of conception:
“So it may be then that the pregnant mother could seek child support from the father of the unborn child for as much as the total cost of all direct medical and pregnancy-related expenses. And then after the child was born, the current child support law in that state would kick in,” McKenna said.
“I’ll also note that the author of the Georgia law said that it may mean that women who are pregnant could ride in HOV lanes because the child’s a human being. They’re along for the ride half-asleep.”
I suppose that might soften the financial burden a little.
But I thought it was significant that yesterday鈥檚 Washington Post carried this headline:
鈥.鈥 Suddenly men are feeling a little more vulnerable.
So, I asked Rob, “at what point do you tell men who end up fathering a certain number of children they can’t support, by order the state, you must get snipped?”
“I don’t think that will happen … laws that try to enforce sterilization of women would typically not be successful, it’s too invasive,” McKenna replied.
That鈥檚 how the law sees it 鈥 forced sterilization would be too invasive for men as well as women.
There is a logic to that鈥 if the law considers abortion too invasive, I suppose it makes sense that it would consider snipping men too invasive.
But then 鈥 if the law鈥檚 solution is to prohibit abortions for women, then logically, it should prohibit snipping for men, meaning that men trying to limit their financial exposure 鈥 would just have to restrain themselves 鈥 one way or the other.
I鈥檒l tell you this, young men 鈥 it鈥檚 never been more important to stay sober on a Saturday night.
