We have two grandchildren: one born in the middle of the pandemic, irresistibly cute, and too young to know who grandpa is yet – and the other who just turned 2 and lives across the country.
The youngest is nearby so we can visit in person, but the 2-year-old we have to visit remotely, which we do – pretty frequently.
All that obsessing over kids getting too much screen time is pretty much out the window now. Her mom just props up the phone she can talk to me in her two-word sentences.
One day while we were chatting, I picked up a pencil with a zebra-shaped eraser that happened to be on the desk – and suddenly, this disembodied zebra would poke its head out from below my chin, behind my ear – at one point it dug its way through my generous isolation beard… and she would giggle every time!
And you see what’s happening – grandpa has a TV show now!
Because you can do all sorts of tricks on TV you could NEVER pull off in person.
And let’s just say… I was quite the hit.
I’m told one the first things my audience says when she gets up is, “Grandpa awake?” Which has raised the stakes because I know I have to top myself, and with an audience of one, it’s all or nothing. Talk about ratings pressure!
And so, like most people, I won’t miss 2020, but I will remember it as the year I became a TV star. A small one – about 4 inches high – but a star just the same.
