There are a lot of buttons on my TV remote, and for a moment, I thought I’d tuned into one of those Disney movies where the team with all the misfit kids wins the game after all … especially when I saw the angel make the other team’s field goal kick swerve outside the uprights.

But no – it was real!

“I mean Geno, he’s 17 for 18 in the first half, I mean who does that? Guys just don’t do that, you know, but remember he did against Jacksonville, he had like 12-13 in a row or something like that,” Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll said about the game against the Denver Broncos Monday.

“So Gino played tonight like he’s been playing the whole time we’ve been practicing. That’s what he’s been looking like he didn’t look any different than what he looks like in practice. and so that’s why we had belief in him and that’s why he was able to win the job and go out there for Monday Night Football and win a football game,” Carroll continued.

For six months, in the back of everyone’s mind, was that dark little thought – can the Seahawks ever win again? Can football in Seattle survive the loss of Russell Wilson?

Well, it did.

“Geno Smith – talk about stepping up and playing,” Steve Raible, play-by-play announcer for Seahawks Radio emphasized.

The whole world saw it!

And overnight, we not only have a star quarterback but a star quarterback who gives substantive answers to reporters’ questions:

“You know he called a pass play, you try and find a completion out there and what they were doing was playing top-down shell defense so you know had to dump the ball off a couple of times which contributed to that, weren’t taking many shots,” Smith said after the game.

No idea what any of that means – but he’s genuinely answering the question:

“Yeah, he was the read. I’m not gonna tell you all the plays but he was in the read and the way they played it the safety ended up vacating the post and then the linebacker had to you know basically carry the seam,” Gino rattling off more complicated football jargon.

More Dave Ross: Orange skies are a beautiful, clear climate change warning

He’s telling us all about “the read,” “safeties on vacation from their posts,” and “seams” doing whatever seams do – it sent me running to my sports thesaurus.

So the kids are all right. The new Seahawks are a real football team. All we need now is for the 72,000 fans who packed Lumen Field to return to the office, and for the West Seattle Bridge to open on time next week – and this could end up being a pretty good year.
