The war in Ukraine is officially real. I can say that with confidence because I happened to be watching Fox last night, and I heard Tucker Carlson himself say so.
That is significant because Tucker became very popular on Russian TV in February for ridiculing predictions of an invasion.
But last night, when the video came out of Ukraine鈥檚 nuclear complex being attacked 鈥 he admitted he had been wrong.
“We’ve been taken by surprise by the whole thing — we’re not the only ones who were — but we’re willing to admit it. The only thing more embarrassing than being wrong in your estimates is pretending that you weren’t. So why didn’t we see this coming? This total loss of control? Well, because we assumed that if things were dire, serious people would be involved in fixing them. But we looked up and we saw Kamala Harris involved.”
Yes! He said it was not his fault that he was wrong, it was Kamala Harris鈥 fault, because she鈥檚 not a serious person. And then he played a Kamala Harris gaffe tape 鈥 because, it鈥檚 entertaining, I guess.
Well, he鈥檚 right about one thing: Kamala Harris was sent to Munich before the invasion to assure the NATO allies of U.S. support on Feb. 19. And here鈥檚 part of what she said:
“We will impose far-reaching financial sanctions, we will target Russia’s financial institutions and key industries, and we will target those who are complicit and those who aid and abet this unprovoked invasion.鈥
Sounded pretty serious to me. Also turned out to be right.
Anyway, at the same time she was in Munich, Tucker was in New York ridiculing President Joe Biden鈥檚 preoccupation with Russia:
“On Sunday mornings, when good people are still asleep at home with their families, your average Russian will still be lurking through the dark streets, trying to subvert somebody else’s democracy, or conquer a peace-loving neighbor.鈥
Yeah, what are the chances of that happening?
And a few days later, on Feb. 22, he said this:
“Ukraine is not even a democracy, despite what Joe Biden endlessly claims. Ukraine is a corrupt, eastern European autocracy that has spent millions of dollars lobbying politicians in Washington, and by the way, made Joe Biden鈥檚 family rich.鈥
And then, he ridiculed Senator Richard Blumenthal for saying this:
“I was so deeply impressed with how resolute and determined people of Ukraine are. They are courageous, they are steadfast, and they’re going to fight in the streets, their neighborhoods, the fields.”
“So that guy,” Tucker says, laughing, “who lied about his own war service, is pretty excited about Ukrainians fighting and dying in the streets.鈥
But, inconveniently, two days after that broadcast, the invasion began, pretty much as Biden predicted. The Ukrainians are fighting back, just as Blumenthal predicted. And the sanctions were imposed, just as Kamala Harris promised.
And the guy who became a star on Russian TV for dismissing the invasion as a joke is saying it鈥檚 Kamala Harris鈥檚 fault.
I just report. You decide.
