Seattle has a lot of things going for it, including wealth, intelligence, and creativity, Seattle mayoral candidate Cary Moon says.

“But we are becoming a city of haves and have-nots,” she told Seattle’s Morning News.

Candidate Profiles: Seattle not growing in strategic way | Running against shades of Murray | Solution to every problem is new tax

Moon says in the 20 years she has been doing behind-the-scenes work with the city, state and other civic leaders, she’s found that coming up with solutions to problems isn’t difficult. What is difficult, she says, is “building the political will and courage to implement them and do the right thing for the well-being of everyone.”

Essentially, she believes we’re a city full of ideas having trouble actually executing them.

Moon became known for her activism opposing the tunnel under Seattle that will replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct. She was a founder of the , which fought to reclaim land along the waterfront.

Moon says she鈥檚 running because she feels 鈥渁n immense duty and responsibility鈥 to make sure Seattle 鈥渨orks for everyone.鈥 She says she鈥檒l use her background to address the root cause of the city鈥檚 biggest challenges, including traffic, surging homelessness and economic disparity.

When she says the city needs to “work for everyone,” she means Seattle should protect people at even the lowest income levels and focus on how to build prosperity that “stays and circulates in our city.” It’s about industrial and economic development policies and supporting small businesses.

“It’s about access to entrepreneurship for people from all races, classes, and income levels,” she said. “It’s also about building a tax system that supports the infrastructure we need.”

Though her opponents, including incumbent Ed Murray and former Mayor Mike McGinn, have proposed an income tax, she supports a capital gains tax.

“I think the most important thing for everyone to recognize is, we’re never going to get ahead of income inequality if we only tax wages,” she said. “We also need to tax wealth.”

She supports a mix of taxes.

Listen to what she has to say about taxing the wealthy.

Who will run against Seattle Mayor Ed Murray?
