‘Broad agreement’ state Legislature will do something ‘on the tax side’

Jun 2, 2017, 11:56 AM | Updated: 10:25 pm

A recently resigned state representative says the Legislature will likely “do something on the tax side” in order to further fund education and come to an agreement on a new state budget.

Jessyn Farrell, a candidate for mayor of Seattle, told Seattle’s Morning News she believes there will be more school funding by the time a budget is agreed upon.

She says there is “broad agreement” that lawmakers will have to do “something” with taxes, however.

The 2017 Legislature, currently in its second special session, ended what political reporter and columnist Legislators still need to reach an agreement on a two-year state budget that satisfies a state Supreme Court mandate on education funding.

³ÉÈËXÕ¾ Radio’s Dave Ross asked Farrell why taxes are even being discussed if Washington state’s economy is so great?

“So, what happens when you have a growing economy is you have more people moving here and a bigger need for services,” she said. “There are more kids in our public schools, there are more people who need mental health assistance, there are more people coming to our parks and using our roads.

“So, while there’s a growing economy, there’s a growing need. And if we’re trying to do new investments on top of the current need, you’re going to have to talk about new revenue.”

Farrell wouldn’t make any predictions as to whether or not there will be a government shutdown.
