It is up to the transgression of homeowners and renters to decide when is the right time to hang up their holiday lights, especially as the days grow shorter and darker.

According to a marketing survey from , Dec. 1 was the most common response for when to hang Christmas lights. Other results from the survey found 3% said they hang lights up on Christmas Day itself. Even fewer get their lights up before Thanksgiving.

4% of homeowners will leave their Christmas lights up all year.

“Every time you decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving, an elf kills a baby reindeer,” said Spike O’Neill, guest host of The Gee and Ursula Show. “And do you really want that blood on your hands?”

Other results from the survey had 12% respond with “before Thanksgiving,” 10% said Nov. 1, 10% said Black Friday, and 8% said people should wait until a week before Christmas.

According to , holiday lights are acceptable from the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) until Jan. 6 — Three Kings Day.

“I am going to just talk about how much I appreciate when people light up their homes. I love it. In fact, I just shared with you guys that we are going to have hooks put around our house finally. Mark has been the one in charge of putting up our Christmas lights, and some years we don’t get to it,” said Ursula Reutin, co-host of The Gee and Ursula Show. “And it always seems like a big to do and I think I’m just going to keep lights on the house and not pull them down. And then, when it comes time, or if I want to start early, or just in the middle of March if it’s still rainy and awful, I could turn it on.”

If keeping holiday or themed lights on year-round becomes more popular, the suggests homeowners should upgrade to LED bulbs, as they use up to 90% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

Should snow days for schools still exist?

“A random day in March, like it’s kind of a sad day?” asked Andrew “Chef” Lanier, the producer of The Gee and Ursula Show. “And you add some holiday cheer?”

“Yes!” Spike exclaimed. “Red in February. Green in March. Purple in April. Black and gold for the graduation month of June. Fourth of July can be red, white blue. Every month you have colored celebrations, waiting at the click of a button.”

Washington, alongside Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming, voted that Dec. 1 is the appropriate day, according to House Method.
