SPD officer Sergio Garcia is officially running for Seattle City Council in District 6, currently represented by Mike O’Brien. Garcia is the second cop to enter the race, and arguably the most聽easy to identify with a styled mustache that is about the size of a patrol car.

His motivation in running is based on homelessness and public safety, as well as the city’s seeming lack of interest in listening to the public’s concern on such issues.

“Small business owners are dealing with crime and homelessness issues everyday, and they’re constantly reaching out to city hall, but no one responds,” he told the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

“People are concerned with crime, people are concerned with transportation, people are concerned with housing. Some people want development, some people want to preserve the neighborhood, but it seems like nobody is asking the people affected by these things,” he said. “It seems like they run an entire city and make legislation policy based on ideology, and that’s not how government should work.”

As to what makes him different on these issues, Garcia hopes to take his experience working on the streets and protecting the community as a police officer into the council.

搁贰尝础罢贰顿:听Seattle council candidate motivated by homelessness

“I’m a public servant who’s dedicated over a decade of my life to protecting and serving people in the community,” he said. “I deal with these issues on a daily basis for nine hours a day.”

“When I was working in the Ballard and Fremont area, I would say that just under 95 percent of the calls were all related to homelessness, so it’s a number one thing, it’s what people are being affected by the most; everybody, including homeless people. They’re some of the most victimized people out there.”

In the meantime, he plans to continue serving in the department during his campaign.

“My life is insane right now, but it is still important for me to part of that organization, and have up to date information for what’s going on.”
