Get used to 10-digit dialing, every time you dial a number.
On Saturday, Western Washington residents will have to enter the appropriate area code in order to make local calls.
That’s because a new area code – 564 – is being added throughout the region on Aug. 28.
New telephone numbers in the 206, 253 and 425 territories will be assigned a 564 area code, initially starting with the 360 area code region.
Population growth in the state has led to a shortage of phone numbers.
State officials are warning people to update programming on security equipment and medical alert devices to 10-digit dialing so those emergency calls get through.
