800-acre wildfire rages 5 miles outside of Chelan

An 800-acre brush fire burns five miles southwest of Chelan, Washington Tuesday morning.

The Stayman Flats Fire ignited Monday afternoon around 3 p.m., growing from an initial 35 acres to over 800 acres by 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The brush fire is 0% contained as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Crews have “held” the fire’s east side and remain focused on the west, according to a DNR spokesperson.

“The crews were not able to get all the way around the fire last night, and it continued to burn upslope. Once it became unshaded several of the brushy draws became active. The fire was still holding along the road system to the east. If the fire crosses that road, the fire district will enact a second and third alarm response for structure protection to the north and west. They are attempting to bring dozer line down on the west flank indirect of the fire.”

鈥淕ood progress鈥 was made on the Stayman Flats Fire Monday night, the DNR wrote in a statement. 鈥淒ozer lines鈥 鈥 sections of bladed earth to remove flammable material鈥 have been placed on the fire鈥檚 flanks. Two DNR wildfire crews have been deployed to the area, along with 鈥渟izable air resources:鈥 four fire bosses, two tankers, and two helicopters.

鈥 a final evacuation notice for residents to leave the area 鈥 were issued Monday night by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office for Downie Canyon Road and Hawks Ridge Road.
