A state audit finds that Seattle Schools are under-charging or not billing at all for use of facilities by outside groups.
During the 2012-2013 school year, auditors found that the district failed to bill for more than 2,400 events, or about 9,000 hours. It’s not clear how much money the district left on the table but it charges between $8.00 and $88.90 per hour, according to
The report also found that the school district rentals office “generated 261 invoices totaling $223,213 from September 1, 2012 to April 30 2013, of which $102,913 is past due.”
The state audit also found “three instances where school staff circumvented District policies and procedures by disguising events as internal activities.” Auditors estimate the District lost $45,000 in fees from those actions.
The district acknowledged the shortcomings and promised better monitoring and staff training.
