Bellingham road reopens after truck slams into I-5 beam

Aug 28, 2014, 1:12 PM | Updated: 2:35 pm

A roadway has reopened and crews have determined an I-5 overpass in Bellingham is safe after a truck slammed into a support beam.

The crash happened Thursday morning on the northbound exit ramp to SR 539, also known as Meridian Street.

“The intersection of Meridian and I-5 is one of the busiest intersections here in Bellingham and Whatcom County, it’s our major retail shopping district in the city,” said Bill Hewett with the Bellingham Fire Department.

Traffic on I-5 in Bellingham was not affected but northbound drivers could not exit to Bellis Fair Mall. Also, Meridian Street was closed in both directions right beneath I-5.
