A Pierce County woman is charged with 43 counts of theft for stealing more than $400,000 from her sick and elderly uncle.
In 1998, Betsey Cammon, 54, was given power of attorney for her uncle, then in his 80s, according to the Pierce County Prosecutor. She was added to her uncle’s bank accounts in 2007. The man was moved to a nursing home in 2009 and a doctor declared that he could no longer handle his financial affairs.
In 2010, the prosecutor claims Cammon failed to pay her uncle’s nursing home bill of $51,000. By then, the prosecutor claims Cammon had already withdrawn almost $200,000 from her uncle’s accounts. A guardian was forced to liquidate the man’s assets to pay his debts. The uncle died in September of 2010.
A family member went to the sheriff in April 2012 and investigators learned that Cammon had withdrawn more than $420,000 from her uncle’s accounts, using some of the money to pay her property taxes, according to the prosecutor. Cammon pleded not guilty Wednesday and a judge set bail at $25,000.
