Seafair has lost the Blue Angels, waterfront tours of Navy ships and now, the Coast Guard. The reason for all the cancellations is the same; federal budget cuts.
“The Coast Guard has made the decision to reduce its participation in community outreach programs, including Seafair,” said public affairs chief Robert Lanier in Seattle. “It’s a tough decision to make because we believe in the value of not only demonstrating our capabilities of our assets but also participating in the communities which support us on a consistent basis.”
The Coast Guard has traditionally offered vessel tours and a search and rescue demonstration during Seafair. Participation this year will be limited to security and enforcement.
The Navy earlier canceled the Blue Angels performances at Seafair, Fleet Week ship visits on Elliot Bay as well as tours of Naval Station Everett during that city’s Independence Day celebration.
