It was beautiful while it lasted, but summer is over.*

Cliff Mass, University of Washington climatologist, said in addition to longer nights and a weakening sun, temperatures won’t likely reach 80 degrees, and certainly not the 90s, anytime soon.

The cool, wet weather is good news for firefighters in Eastern Washington. Mass said it also means the city of Seattle can probably quit its water conservation ad campaign. Water levels at Chester Morse Lake have stabilized with conservation efforts and more rain.

Mass said that snow will return to higher elevations in the North Cascades and southern British Columbia mountains.

Make way for El Nino. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently said that we will experience one of the strongest El Ninos in recent memory, which means it’ll be very wet, very dry, or a mix of both. In any case, it will be extreme.

*Based on the calendar, the last day of summer is September 22.
