Elderly couple dies after driving car into water off Herron Island

An elderly couple died Sunday after the husband drove their vehicle off the driveway of their home in Herron Island into water, the Pierce County Sheriff鈥檚 Office confirmed.
The husband suffered from dementia. Deputies stated that the accident occurred northwest of Goodpastor Park at approximately 12 p.m. Herron Island is a small private island in Pierce County between Harstine Island and the Key Peninsula.
The vehicle allegedly went down the driveway and over a bulkhead structure before crashing into the water. The Pierce County Dive Team, West Pierce Fire, the Coast Guard, and the Tacoma Police Department united to conduct a water rescue, alongside two good Samaritans who jumped into the water to try and save them.
When the couple was pulled from the water, they were both pronounced dead at the scene.
