As Western Washington prepared for snow, more than 200 flights were canceled in and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Most of them are Alaska Airlines flights.

Alaska says it has implemented a “flexible travel policy,” which means if travelers purchased a refundable ticket or their flights have been canceled, a full refund can be requested.

About 12,000 passengers have been impacted by the cancellations. Affected travelers have been contacted, the airlines say, and have been accommodated on other flights. The company says it also gave a dynamic waiver to guests to adjust their travel themselves.

According to , Seattle is seeing about 9% of its flights being canceled, and an additional 42 flights have been delayed. The airport sees about 1,200 flights total a day.

Alaska Airlines says it has “proactively thinned” its schedule in preparation for forecasted winter weather.

From Albuquerque to Baltimore, the flights include cross-country arrivals and departures with scheduled times throughout the morning and afternoon, with some being canceled and others being delayed later into the evening.

The region is bracing for snow, but by Tuesday morning, when cancellations became apparent, heavy precipitation had yet to slam Seattle.

Even so, the airline says it’s getting ahead of the weather and more cancellations could be coming.
