An orca calf seen swimming in the Salish Sea Monday is the fourth southern-resident orca born in three months.

Four calves in three months is good news, said Howard Garrett of the Orca Network.

“Four new babies in three months is highly unusual,” Garrett said.

However, the calf is also the fourth documented orca born in 2.5 years, Garrett said.

The calf was seen with J-pod near Galianno Island, B.C., reports.

The southern-resident orca population is 81, according to the Orca Network.
