More than 400 tremors registered in a 25-hour period in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.

As of Dec. 4, 427 tremors registered within 25.8 hours, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

Earthquake tracker

An episodic tremor slip, or slow slip, can last for minutes to days, even weeks, according to a spokesperson with the Seismic Network. They generate such low levels of shaking that only sensitive instruments can detect them.

Slow slip episodes have been occurring about every 14 months since the 1990s in northern Washington and British Columbia.

The report of a slow slip comes just after a magnitude-4.8 earthquake hit Victoria on Dec. 29. That earthquake was celebrated by seismologists, as it was the largest since 2001. Seismologists were able to use the quake to test the early warning detection system that’s still being fine-tuned.
