Kent parents arrested for neglecting, shaking newborn boy

Aug 4, 2011, 2:39 PM | Updated: Oct 10, 2012, 7:28 am

A 19-year-old Kent mother is in jail after police say she admitted shaking her newborn baby and not feeding him when she was angry.

The 5-week-old boy was brought into Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital with uncontrollable seizures and other injuries, but his mother told doctors she had no idea what was wrong.

“When eventually confronted with both medical evidence and the inconsistencies of her statements, she admitted that she had shaken the child quite violently,” said Kent Police Lieutenant Pat Lowery.

He said the mother also admitted she sometimes wouldn’t feed her baby, who now has brain damage. The 20-year-old father told police he was aware their baby was in really bad shape, but still didn’t try to get medical help for several days.

Both are in jail and face several charges while their baby is in state custody fighting for his life.
