Sanders campaign raises $1.3 million from WA in January

Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign announced Friday it has raised more than $1.3 million in Washington state in the first month of 2020, according to a press release. Since February 2019, the campaign has raised more than $6 million in Washington state alone.

2020 Democratic frontrunners turn focus to Washington state

Donations have come in from more than 64,000 people, with the average donation at $18.72, and the most common donor occupation being “teacher.”

“Working families across Washington are giving $3, $18, $27, or whatever they can to help elect Bernie Sanders,” Bernie 2020 Washington state director Carin Chase wrote in Friday’s press release.

Nationwide, Sanders’ campaign has raised $25 million in January.

With the primaries in Washington state moved earlier this year, taking place in March instead of May, candidates are turning their attention to voters in the Pacific Northwest. The new March 10 date puts Washington’s primaries ahead of 16 other scheduled primaries in 2020, and only one week after .

All registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail after Feb. 21.

Washington state angles for relevance in 2020 presidential election

Sanders is not alone in his focus on Washington state. Senator Elizabeth Warren opened campaign offices in Seattle in December, followed by Sanders’ less than a month later.

This week, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg became the third candidate to open campaign offices in Seattle, and will be opening a new headquarters in Spokane on Saturday.
