A 42-year-old man was arrested for harassment on Tuesday for threatening to kill Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan.
Police say they were notified that a man had left a voicemail at the mayor’s office Tuesday morning. The message stated that the man wanted to kill Durkan. Investigators were able to determine who the man was and that the call was placed from an Auburn address.
Officers arrested Rashidi Slaughter at his home in the . He was booked into King County jail for investigation of telephone harassment.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office says Slaughter has a significant criminal history.
Seattle Police say they will investigate any threat made to public officials and work with prosecutors to make sure that they are held responsible. This is not the first time SPD detectives have investigated other, unrelated threats against city council members.
The mayor is no stranger to threats against her. Her home address has been redacted in official documents over threats made against her during her time as a U.S. Attorney. That redaction didn’t seem to matter last summer when protesters arrived outside the mayor’s home. Durkan alleged that Councilmember Kshama Sawant was responsible for leading the protesters to her home.
