Police are investigating after a suspect was shot when an officer interrupted a shooting in progress in Pioneer Square early Sunday morning. The officer opened fire on the suspect, but detectives do not believe the gunfire struck the suspect, but, instead, caused him to flee.
The incident occurred near the Sinking Ship parking garage at Second Avenue and James Street shortly after 2 a.m.
Officers were in the neighborhood monitoring bar closings when they heard shots fired near the garage. An officer saw a man standing on top of the garage pointing a handgun. The officer fired two rounds at the suspect.
The suspect then fled northbound on Second Avenue in a red sedan. Officers were unable to locate the suspect or the vehicle.
Police then found an adult man, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg, in the parking lot of the garage. The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center.
The victim told officers that the suspect shot him in the leg during a dispute in the parking lot.
Detectives will continue to investigate. The officer was placed on standard administrative leave.
