A climber who fell 700 feet on Mount Hood has died and more climbers are still stuck on the mountain.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office says the climber was airlifted to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A group of four people is stranded in the Hogsback area and one of them is injured. They’re in a safe location but are staying put because the descent could be dangerous.
Another group of climbers is stuck in the same area and meeting up with that other group.
The naval base at Whidbey Island is sending a helicopter to help rescue crews guide the climbers down the mountain. Rescuers say rough weather is rolling in early Wednesday morning.
Mount Hood is Oregon’s tallest peak and attracts more than 10,000 climbers a year. The peak is notorious for loose rocks in warm weather, and the sun has been out this week.
