Snohomish County urges window safety after 9 children fall this year

Last week, two children fell out of windows in Snohomish County, bringing the county’s yearly total to nine children who have fallen out of windows.
Some of the children involved in the falls were as young as two years old, and fortunately, all nine children survived their falls.

South County Fire (SCF) noted in a post on social media that injuries from the falls can be serious and provided measures residents can take to reduce the risks of a child falling out of a window.
Snohomish County reported 21 falls in the county last year, two of which were fatal.
鈥淩emember that screens are built to keep bugs out; they鈥檙e not strong enough to withstand the weight of a child,鈥 said Christie Veley with South County Fire, according to .
SCF provided suggestions that can help keep kids safe from falling out of windows.
“One way to keep children safe is install window stops (sometimes called 鈥渓ocks鈥) to prevent the window from opening more than 4 inches,” SCF wrote.
SCF also mentioned to remember to keep windows closed and locked when not in use and to actively supervise children at all times, especially around windows.
