You better not speed through even though there are no classes — you could still risk a ticket.

Figuring out Washington鈥檚 confusing rules for driving in school zones

This was one of the first questions I got when the schools were shut down: Why are the flashing lights still on in school zones when there are no kids there?

We have some clarification, at least from the City of Seattle. Since schools are still providing meals to kids, the city is going to enforce the 20 mile-an-hour speed limit at 16 schools.聽 Expect to see the yellow lights flashing between 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. each day from now until the end of June.

School streets in Washington receive failing grades for distracted driving

If those school zones are equipped with camera enforcement, those cameras will not be turned on, but you should expect to find officers patrolling these spots.

The list of schools enforcing that 20 miles per hour speed limit:

  • Broadview-Thomson K-8
  • Nathan Hale High School
  • Robert Eagle Staff K-8
  • Eckstein Middle School
  • Catharine Blaine K-8
  • Bailey Gatzert Elementary
  • Thurgood Marshall Elementary
  • West Seattle Elementary
  • Chief Sealth High School / Denny Middle School
  • Concord Elementary
  • Mercer Middle School
  • Aki Kurose Middle School
  • Rising Star Elementary
  • Dunlap Elementary
  • Rainier Beach High School
  • Rainier View Elementary
