Police say a fight over which of two rival gangs was better led to a fatal shooting at an apartment building in Lakewood Wednesday morning.
Authorities responded to the call of shots fired at the Williambsburg Apartments in the 11200 block of Bridgeport Way Southwest around 3 a.m. Wednesday. The caller told police they’d witnessed a man dragging another man into the parking lot.
When police arrived, they found a body in the parking lot. Lieutenant Chris Lawler, with the Lakewood Police Department, says the suspect then appeared.
“They were approaching on foot. They can see what appears to be a body lying in the parking lot. As they’re kind of moving up again, even closer on foot, a male comes out of an apartment with a handgun yelling at the victim that he’s going to kill him.”
Officers ordered the man to the ground. He complied and was taken into custody.
Medical units were called to aid the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
During an interview with police, the suspect admitted he was the shooter.
“He’s already made statements to the patrol officers that, ‘I’m the guy that fired the shots,'” says Lawler.
Authorities are not identifying the victim until next of kin are notified. The victim is reportedly a 29-year-old male.
