Six years ago, after arriving to the states from the U.K. having lived there for 6 months and just coming off of a gnarly breakup, I moved into a tiny studio apartment in downtown Seattle to start fresh. I didn’t have much and I didn’t need much either. My shoebox studio was perfect as it was across the street from the I was working for at the time, it was directly above a corner mart which was a purveyor of delicious PBR and it was all my own.
Things were great. But there was still something missing.
The walls in my studio apartment, like the walls in most places, were stark white and absolutely void of any sort of personality. It was like staring at a group of Klansmen trapped in an extreme vegetative state. So I decided to do something about it. My idea to hang vinyl was inspired by my friend Rachel’s awesomness and the lone she had hanging in her hallway. I took that idea and ran with it. Hard.
Thrift stores became my second home. I searched through bins and bins of dirty, dusty sometimes damaged vinyl just to make my walls a bit more welcoming and easier on the eyes. My plan was to completely cover my north wall with random album covers from any and all genres while splattering my other wall with headshot album covers. Soon, my shoebox studio was a shrine for the forgotten nostalgia of years past. I was inside of a jukebox of my making with all the best artists keeping their eyes on me while I basked in the sights and sounds of my labor.
This leads me to the fact that Bop Street Records in Ballard will be shutting its doors June 30th and moving to the former Tableau space at 2220 NW Market St. And! Because Bop Street is moving, owner Dave Vorhees needs to get rid of lots of stock and everything in the store is on sale with lots of product on SUPER DUPER SALE! Some CD’s are greatly reduced in price, all cassette tapes are fifty cents and 8 tracks, yes, are massively cheap too. For me, though, the big draw is the fact that Bop Street has massive amounts of vinyl and if you make it to the basement of Bop Street you’ll find thousands upon thousands of vinyl on sale for $3 a piece! Here’s a sampling of some gems I was able to get my hands on…
