Cymbals Eat Guitars played the Crocodile last night to an overwhelmingly small crowd. Or, maybe I should say they played to an overwhelmingly intimate crowd. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Intimate. I really don’t think the small, er, I mean, intimate crowd was a reflection of the music that Cymbals Eat Guitars play rather I think it’s a reflection of people just not knowing who on earth these guys are. I’m always curious how it is that people hear about the bands they love. For instance, I only know about CEG because I get e-mails from PR companies and labels (because I’m awesome) letting me know about all these bands that I most likely wouldn’t otherwise know about. Sometimes I’ll check a band out much like I did with CEG, and other times I’ll disregard the e-mails because I get so damn many that it’s hard to keep up with all the new music coming at me. I’m guessing that there were probably 30 or so people at the show last night but the people that were there were totally into the music. And that’s what really matters, right?
Cymbals Eat Guitars put on a great show if you’re into lots and lots and lots of feedback and guitar noise. The songs I knew, I liked. The others were just alright. One problem was that it was really hard to understand what singer Joe D’Agostino was singing about throughout most of the evening and for most of the songs. I could decipher some of what he was saying but that was only because I had listened to their tunes earlier and was familiar with a handful of them. And then if you add on top of that, that a lot of the songs sounded similar, it made for not the best experience and I eventually zoned out and starting thinking about hitting up to play a few rounds of pinball.
I would say that for a first time experience with Cymbals Eat Guitars, listening to either Why There Are Mountains or the newest LP, Lenses Alien would be your best bet in order to fully appreciate what these guys have to offer.
