Decibel Festival 2011 Video: Martyn, Starslinger, Ladytron, Geographer

Decibel Festival 2011 proved to be another great success. Thursday night I headed down to The Showbox Market to catch a bit of Geographer, Depressed Buttons and Ladytron and Friday was the absolute best what with Mux Mool, Starslinger and Martyn performing around Seattle. I had heard of Geographer just days before through my friend Steve of and decided to check them out. I only caught the last few songs but the last few songs were pretty good.
Ladytron closed the night and by this time the Showbox was probably double what it was for Geographer and Depressed Buttons but the performance itself was lackluster. I’ve seen Ladytron before and the show this time around was exactly the same but with a different set list and different background lighting. Don’t get me wrong, the music is great and their albums are fantastic (i can only speak to their first record and third record) but if you’re looking for stage presence and danceable grooves, this isn’t the show for you. I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting, I guess I just wasn’t in the mood to stand around and be bored.
Check some video…

Friday night was waaay better. I didn’t make it to the Crocodile in time to catch Mux Mool’s set but I did make it there in time to interview the man. I texted Mux Mool (that’s right. i have his number) letting him know that I was in the vicinity and he got back to me surprisingly quick telling me to come and find him in the Croc’s smoking section. I saw him standing, chatting with a couple of fans and when I called his name he seemed to recognize me as we had chatted several of months ago after he played a killer set at the Chop Suey. So, that was pretty cool. I suggested we kick it in the side alley to conduct the chat because it was quieter than the front of the Crocodile and you can expect that interview on this blog in the coming days. Go here if you want to read an e-mail conversation we had recently. Let me just tell you that the interview did in fact end with Mux Mool and I singing TV theme songs. That’s right. TV Theme songs. Oh! I neglected to mention that I hadn’t been into the Crocodile yet that night and the line out front was super long. So, after the chat I asked Mux Mool if he could let me walk into the club with him and bypass the line and he totally did. Super cool.
After being escorted into the Croc by Mr. Mool, I got a drink and waited for Starslinger to take the stage and as soon as he started his set the crowd went completely berserk. This was Starslinger’s first time performing in the States and aside from one small technical problem (the audio cut out for a minute) the entire electro hip hop infused set was top notch.

I left the Crocodile to check out Martyn who was performing at Neumos. I only know about Martyn because I’m a member of and when I received his mix in the mail several months ago, I couldn’t stop listening to it. So, when I found out that he was going to be performing at Decibel I had to see him. After enjoying a couple of drinks I couldn’t help but get on the dancefloor and move. It was one of the best nights I’ve had dancing in a long time and it was a great end to an evening that was full of both new and familiar electronic artists.
