Die Antwoord is a hip-hop group from Cape Town, South Africa consisting of three members, Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek (or maybe DJ Fishsticks, as he was introduced at Sonic Boom). They’ve been making really catchy and really strange electro/hip hop since 2009 and just recently started getting some attention from folks who know from music. Die Antwoord incorporate lots of Zef elements and references in their music. What is Zef you ask? Zef is a South African slang term that describes a unique South African style which is modern and trashy and also includes out-of-date, discarded cultural and style elements. Yolandi has been quoted as saying…
‘It’s associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and shit. Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style.’
Die Antwoord played an in-store performance at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard recently and I caught in all on video! By the way, lead rapper Ninja sure does put Elvis Presley to shame with his own amazing hip moves. Watch and learn…
Die Antwoord’s debut album, $O$ , is out now and you should totally buy it. These guys are ridiculously entertaining and with song titles like which is shortened to ‘Fish Paste’ on the record and means ‘Your Mother’s C*#% in a Fishpaste Jar’ how can you go wrong? Ok, I can think of lots of ways but let’s not get into that.
