I made a grand discovery on the drive to work today. No, I don’t have 4 nipples or a tail or anything cool like that but what I found out really blew my mind. Now I want a tail. A bushy one I think would be cool.
Ok. Enough tail talk. Back to my discovery of the day. I’ve been on a Stevie Wonder/Van Morrison/Electro/Dance kick lately and today I wanted to try something new and fresh. If the 1970’s can be considered new and fresh. And they can. Before leaving for work I shuffled through a few boxes of my cassettes and while I almost went for 1981 Diary of a Madman Ozzy, I decided to go with Joe Cocker’s Greatest Hits. I started the cassette on the second side and the song that filled the empty space in my car was ‘Darling Be Home Soon’, then on to ‘High Time We Went’ and finally closing out side two was a cover of . Great song by the way. The original I mean.
I’m stopped at a light and I flip the cassette over to side one. I’ve perfected the art of flipping a cassette while driving so I don’t necessarily need to be stopped at a light to perform this action. I don’t have an in-dash tape player, I actually have a CD player there but it busted several months ago so now I use a portable tape deck that I keep near the gear shift. Anywhoo. Side one opens with ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ which was a really nice tune to hear as I haven’t heard that cut Now, here is where my mind gets blown. The next song from Mr. Cocker is ‘Woman to Woman’, a great up beat call and response cut.
Not only is it a great song…wait for it…Tu Pac totally sampled Joe Cocker! I had no idea. The experience brought me back to my high school daze, barricaded in my bedroom listening to Led Zeppelin and totally putting it together that the Beastie Boys sampled The Hammer of the Gods.
I love these moments.
