Noise for the Needy was started by then college student Dave Green back in the early nineties in California to raise money for Mary’s Kitchen, a struggling soup kitchen run by Mary McAnena. Dave had this to say about why he wanted to put an event like this together…
“I was inspired after working at a homeless kitchen in Hart park near my campus. Most of the students had no idea that there was this problem of homelessness right down the street, I wanted to get these students’ attention so I came up with the idea to put together a benefit concert that would draw attention to the problem of homelessness, give local bands some exposure and create a event that would draw students together.â€
It worked! And soon enough NFTN made its way to the northwest taking claim in Seattle. In 2004, Richard Green (Dave’s brother), with the help of Jeff Henry, started the first Noise for the Needy show in Seattle. The first show included four local bands and took place at Nectar Lounge in Fremont. Since then it’s grown exponentially taking over clubs all around the city and running as a 5 day event.
will be kicking things off tomorrow, June 9th, at Chop Suey with Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside and will run through Sunday night. There are so many awesome bands performing it will be impossible to catch them all but you should try! I got the chance to chat with local musician about the event, his music and he even played some of his really great tunes in studio too. Make sure to go to Conor Byrne Pub this Thursday to see him perform live!
I would also recommend checking (their last show ever), , , and .
