certainly know how to build a masterpiece of a record with each song sounding like a magnum opus. From the very start of five piece Manchester based Spokes new record Everyone I Ever Met through to the end, it’s hard not to feel like each song is giving you a great big fat hug. And while you’re enjoying the gentle embrace of the music, lyrics slowly cocks her head, leans in to your ear and whispers ever so gently sweet nothings to you the entire time, raising the hair on the back of your neck having you feel like you are with your secret lover, naked and in the dark.
Title track ‘Everyone I Ever Met’ is grandiose and majestic and completely encapsulates the sound that Spokes effortlessly weave through the entire album. The song ebbs and flows for five minutes moving along from a spellbinding stillness into a rowdy, boisterous instrumental blowout and then digresses to the quiet from before, adding this time, vocals that will absolutely melt your heart. On any given song when the collective choral vocals of Owain, Matthew, Liam, Ruth & John-Michael enter the picture you are already steeped in such hearty emotion that it’s easy to get wrapped up, swept away and eventually lost in their words.
Spokes create a beautiful, uplifting and at times an almost mournful soundscape replete with olympian orchestral swells, quiet angelic croons, and songs that build to massively gorgeous climaxes that will have you floating on feelings of euphoria days after having listened to the record.
