burst onto the music scene in the early nineties amidst the grunge era of rock and roll and made quite a nice career for themselves. In between drug addiction and breakups these guys were real rockers with songs like ‘Sex Type Thing’, ‘Dead and Bloated’, ‘Vasoline’, ‘Interstate Love Song’ and so many other songs that would grab you by the balls and twist. I was a huge fan of the raw power these guys had and really liked that they could weave in some slower, really pretty songs like ‘Pretty Penny’ from their second record Purple or the somewhat jazzy number ‘And So I Know’ from their third record Tiny Music…Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop. I got off the STP train after the album No. 4. It completely rocks, it’s the last one I’ve heard and I really don’t feel like I’m missing anything.
It’s been almost a decade since Stone Temple Pilots have released anything new. However, on May 25th the boys will be unleashing their latest effort, the self titled Stone Temple Pilots. I’ve been listening to the record today and it’s nothing special. My mind isn’t blown and I’m not saying ‘Wow! Stone Temple Pilots are back and with a vengeance no less!’. It’s more like ‘Ok. Stone Temple Pilots are back. Why?’. Alright, the lead single ‘Between the Lines’ is catchy and I’m sure it will totally rock hearing it performed live but it’s quite lackluster. Sure, the song ‘Hazy Daze’ has a cool riff to start the track and it sort of rocks, but again, nothing stand out. Stone Temple Pilots will always hold a special place in my CD collection but it seems with this new record that the boys have mellowed out a tad too much for my taste and have completely lost their raw, break your balls edge.
