MUTEK is sort of Seattle’s own sister festival up there in Montreal, Canada and has been surviving and thriving since its inception in 2000. Here’s a bit from the MUTEK …
‘MUTEK is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art…Since its first edition, the MUTEK festival has distinguished itself as an international rendezvous for original and avant-garde programming. In terms of content, the festival’s range strives to be diverse, with interests in both the experimental and the playful sides of digital creativity. MUTEK’s programming intends to create a sonic space that can support innovation in new electronic music and digital art.’
So, if you’re looking to get out of the house this Thursday I recommend heading to Fremont and hitting up Nectar so you can dance the night away. Nordic Soul, an awesome local DJ who has shared the stage with many notables such as Simian Mobile Disco, Apparat and Boys Noize will open the night with his emotive, chameleon like DJ’ing leaving no ass unshaken. I was fortunate enough to get to chat with Nordic Soul about this event and you can listen to the interview below…
Then you have Stephen Beaupre of MUTEK ready to keep the dance floor moving with his schizophrenic blips, roaming bass and overall energetic flow. Here’s a bit about Stephen from GAFFTA.org…
‘More than 10 years of active participation on the Montreal scene has converted Stephen Beaupre into an uncontestable dj/ artist in the world of Canadian music…attracting attention with his Crackhaus project, for which he collaborates with his friend and fellow artist Deadbeat, Steve has managed to gain recognition as a solo artist with his EP Dirty Lipreading on the upstart Montreal label Musique Risquee, launched by Akufen and Vincent Lemieux.’
Finally, closing out the night is another friend of MUTEK, Akufen aka Marc Leclair. Also a native of the Montreal music scene, Akufen’s music can be described as tech-house with lots of chopped up beats and glitchy production. Here’s a bit about him…
‘…Leclair’s pseudonym comes from the french word for tinnitus (ringing of the ears), acouphene. His 2002 album “My Way” introduced his concept of “microsampling”, which was essentially a way of using extremely small and short clips of samples he had randomly recorded off of F.M. radio broadcasts as a key musical element. Leclair has also gone under the pseudonyms Horror Inc., David Scott, Nefuka, and Anna Kaufen.’
