Significant amendments to the big, beautiful bill
Republicans revised the bill ahead of the House floor vote. The package includes tax cuts for individuals and businesses, updated work requirements for Medicaid, and funding for Trump’s mass deportation operation.
House Speaker Mike Johnson made several last-minute changes to the bill to address some Republican opposition.
Speaker Johnson’s proposed revisions included a $40,000 federal deduction limit for state and local taxes (SALT), up from the initial $30,000 proposal. There is currently a $10,000 limit on the SALT deductions.
The “big, beautiful bill” now heads to the Republican-controlled Senate, where it will face further amendments over the next several weeks of debate. Trump and GOP leadership hope to have a bill finalized by Independence Day.
