US Olympic and Paralympic officials bar transgender women from competing in Olympic women鈥檚 sports

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) 鈥� The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has effectively barred transgender women from competing in women鈥檚 sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics and other sports it has an 鈥渙bligation to comply鈥� with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
The change, announced Monday with a quiet change on the USOPC鈥檚 website and confirmed in a letter sent to national governing bodies, follows a similar step taken by the NCAA earlier this year.
The USOPC change is noted obliquely as a detail under 鈥淯SOPC Athlete Safety Policy鈥� and reference鈥檚 Trump鈥檚 executive order, 鈥淜eeping Men Out of Women鈥檚 Sports,鈥� signed in February. That order, among other things, threatens to 鈥渞escind all funds鈥� from organizations that allow transgender athlete participation in women鈥檚 sports.
The national governing bodies will likely follow the USOPC鈥檚 directive.
